Main Purpose of Job

Supervises the pesticide formulation and residue analysis group in conjunction with the Department's and Section's programs, FDA contracts, FERN commitments and those initiatives prompted by State, Federal and Local regulatory programs to conform with consumer protection, public health and environment standards. Perform analysis on feeds, fertilizers, pesticides, soils water, and other related matrices as required.

POSITION DUTIES

Supervises the pesticide formulation and residue group by; assigning, scheduling and reviewing work; trains staff on selecting the appropriate method, construct a QA Plan and implement it, record relevant data to support the results of the analysis; approve leave; evaluate employees at least twice a year; enforce personnel rules and regulations and policies of the State and Department; hold period meetings with staff.

Develop a QA/QC Plan and procedures applicable for samples submitted for residue and formulation analysis. Modify and/or validate non-peered reviewed methods, especially for residue analysis, to support the results and conclusions of the analysis.  Use primarily Gas and Liquid Chromatographs and various detectors to determine the qualitative and quantitative presence of requested, or revealed, analytes in the sample(s).

Perform routine maintenance of instruments and troubleshoot the instrumentation and devices used for the job functions as described in manuals to keep within manufacturer's specifications.

Attends seminars, workshops and training sessions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or other related science which includes completion of at least 24 credit hours in chemistry from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience performing laboratory chemical analysis work in a public health or chemistry laboratory.

Notes:

1. Possession of a master’s degree in chemistry or related science from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

2. Possession of a doctorate in chemistry from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in chemistry classification or chemistry specialty codes in the chemistry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least 3 years of experience as a supervisor.

At least 3 years of experience testing pesticide samples, both formulation and  trace analysis with environmental matrices.

At least 2 years experience with Gas and Liquid Chromatographs with mass spectrometry detection.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
