Introduction
The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s insurance industry and protects Maryland consumers. There are approximately 1,600 insurance companies and more than 135,000 insurance producers (agents and brokers) that conduct business in the State of Maryland and that impact Maryland citizens who purchase insurance products. Through the diligence of a highly professional staff, the MIA works to facilitate a strong insurance marketplace where consumers are well informed and treated fairly.

Main Purpose of Job
The Chief Actuary is responsible for organizing, directing and managing all operations and personnel of the Office of the Chief Actuary within the Maryland Insurance Administration. The primary work of the Office of the Chief Actuary is health insurance rate review.
MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Statistics or related fields.
Experience: A minimum of ten (10) years of related actuarial experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate through fellowship standing in the Society of Actuaries.
- Membership in the American Academy of Actuaries.
- Expertise in the Federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
- In-depth understanding of health insurance markets.
- Strong logical thinking, written and verbal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage staff is preferred.
