Introduction

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s insurance industry and protects Maryland consumers.  There are approximately 1,600 insurance companies and more than 135,000 insurance producers (agents and brokers) that conduct business in the State of Maryland and that impact Maryland citizens who purchase insurance products.  Through the diligence of a highly professional staff, the MIA works to facilitate a strong insurance marketplace where consumers are well informed and treated fairly.

Main Purpose of Job

The Network Engineer is responsible for maintaining and updating LAN/WAN infrastructure to optimize network operations, installing and supporting network security products such as firewalls, intrusion protection systems and access control systems and managing VPN and WAN links to external sites and vendors.  Job duties will include troubleshooting and resolving hardware and software issues on servers and network equipment and reviewing current levels of security patching and virus protection for network devices.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education:  Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Information Technology or equivalent experience.

Experience:  A minimum of three (3) years of experience with network administration.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Cisco Certified Network Association (CCNA) Certification is preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills with the following:

  • Firewalls ASA5500 series
  • IronPort security web appliances
  • Cisco Enterprise switches and routers
  • Radius Server Windows
  • NAC and CAS
  • WLC

Experience working with the following protocols:

  • LDAP
  • TCP/IP
  • OSPF
  • STP
  • RSTP
  • DNS
  • DHCP
  • VLAN’s
  • VTP
  • TFTP
  • SNMP
  • VPN

Experience with the following operating systems:

  • Linux
  • Windows 2008
  • Netware 6.5  

Experience with the following applications:

  • ASDM
  • CiscoWorks
  • SolarWinds engineering tool set
  • Wireshart
  • LDAP browser
  • Windows DHCP
  • DNS
