IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate will possess a degree in Chemistry, Biology or Microbiology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology or Microbiology; and
Two or more years of experience in environmental laboratory analysis; and
Possession of a valid Driver's License.

Or
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-specific competencies noted below.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

  • Considerable knowledge of laboratory analysis methods and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of environmental pollutants sampling and testing.
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and local environmental control and mitigation laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of chemical and biological testing procedures, state and federal guidelines relating to laboratory certification, laboratory computer databases (LIMS), spreadsheets and environmental sample collection procedures.
  • Skill in the use and operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in handling potentially dangerous chemicals, and operating laboratory instrumentation and the collection and processing of environmental samples.
  • Ability to use a computer and related software.
  • Ability to conduct and interpret chemical laboratory test results.
  • Ability to use and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to operate scientific instrumentation such as spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers and nutrient analyzers to produce usable data.
  • Ability to follow strict SOPs relating to the analysis of water, soil and air samples in order to meet state and federal guidelines.
  • Ability to evaluate data to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain records and communicate supply needs to supervisor.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below.

  • Performs laboratory analyses using complex scientific instrumentation; Examples of instrumentation include nutrient analyzers, gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers and spectrophotometers.
  • Ensures that all tests meet strict quality control standards as specified by NELAC and conform to Standard Methods and EPA specifications.
  • Enters data from sample analysis into the laboratory database within times designated by lab policy with minimal errors.
  • Performs quality control checks on data to ensure compliance with strict guidelines, while following laboratory procedures for error correction.
  • Maintains records for quality assurance, dates of analyses, and all standards and chemicals used in each analysis.
  • Troubleshoots chemical and instrumentation problems by interpreting the raw data.
  • Performs periodic maintenance on laboratory instrumentation.
  • Modifies or creates analyses to match various chemical and/or physical compositions of samples.
  • Maintains laboratory inventories of supplies to ensure sample deadlines are met.
  • Trains backup personnel for assigned analyses.
  • Prepares cost analyses for budget purposes.
  • Writes or amends Standard Operating Procedures for analyses.
  • Researches and develops new methods or modifies existing methods for chemical analyses.
  • Reviews and recommends new instrumentation.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
