MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's degree in Biology or Chemistry.

Or
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience in environmental laboratory analyses will substitute for the Bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of chemical and biological testing procedures, state and federal guidelines relating to laboratory certification, laboratory computer databases (LIMS), spreadsheets and environmental sample collection procedures.
  • Skill in handling potentially dangerous chemicals, operation of laboratory instrumentation and the collection and processing of environmental samples.
  • Ability to operate scientific instrumentation such as spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers and nutrient analyzers to produce usable data.
  • Ability to follow strict SOPs relating to the analysis of water, soil and air samples in order to meet state and federal guidelines.
  • Ability to evaluate data to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain records and communicate supply needs to supervisor.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Conducts laboratory analysis of environmental samples for pollutants including organic content, chlorophyll and bacteria content using spectrophotometers, microscopes and centrifuges. Analysis must meet strict quality control standards as specified by NELAC and conform to Standard Methods and EPA specifications.
  • Enters data from sample analysis into the laboratory database within times designated by lab policy with minimal errors.
  • Maintains records for quality assurance, dates of analyses, and all standards and chemicals used in each analysis.
  • Performs quality control cross checks on other analysts data to ensure compliance with strict guidelines, while following laboratory procedures for error correction.
  • Performs other related duties as required such as back-up analyst for other sections of the laboratory.
  • Generates and updates laboratory SOPs to meet certification guidelines, maintains records relating to data generated and tracks supplies used in performance of tests performed.
  • Collects and preserves air/water/soil samples according to strict standardized procedures and returns them for subsequent laboratory analysis while maintaining chain of custody records.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
