IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate will possess at least three years of experience in a large animal shelter environment and/or three years working in an animal clinic environment, three years working in customer service and two years of supervisory training experience. Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel. Must be able to multi-task in a high-pace environment, and have strong organizational skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
One year of experience in animal care in a shelter environment, veterinary clinic, or animal care facility; and

Possession of a valid Driver License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Work inside and outside.
  • Standing up/ Sitting down.
  • Use of PPE.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

  • Working knowledge of Florida laws and Hillsborough County animal care ordinances pertaining to small animals.
  • Working knowledge of procedures for the care and humane treatment of small animals.
  • Working knowledge of general maintenance and sanitation techniques used in animal shelters.
  • Some knowledge of animal drug use regulations and euthanasia programs, including the operation of an animal cremation unit.
  • Skill in administering medications and medical treatments to animals.
  • Ability to use animal handling equipment within a shelter environment, including specialized handling of dangerous or suspect rabid animals.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to read and understand job related material.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions.
  • Ability to perform duties with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to control and move animals weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Ability to use a computer and related software.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.
  • Performs euthanasia of selected abused, injured, or unhealthy animals to prevent undo suffering and pain.
  • Observes animals for signs of injury, sickness and disease.
  • Assists staff with selection, medical testing and treatment of animals under consideration for adoption.
  • Assists veterinarian staff with care and medical treatment of sick, injured, feral and abused animals.
  • Surgically prepares deceased animals for rabies testing.
  • Coordinates the intake of animals from field officers and citizens including applicable paperwork, data entry and record keeping.
  • Assigns shelter tags, pens and cages for placement of animals in designated areas.
  • Assigns and performs daily sanitation and maintenance tasks for cages, pens and shelter facility to insure proper cleanliness standards are maintained.
  • Maintains inventories of food, cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Inspects assigned areas for safety compliance, routine maintenance requirements and animal inventory control to comply with standards and policy.
  • Assists citizens by locating animals within the shelter area; resolving conflicts; providing information and education regarding Animal Services and animal laws, and ensuring safety of persons within the shelter to promote good customer relations. Provides other customer service related duties as required.
  • Operates crematorium, maintains files and prepares files and related reports.
  • Maintains medical, technical and legal documentation required in a shelter operation to include drug usage and treatment reports and records.
  • Picks up donated supplies from private and public agencies.
  • May perform team leader duties.
  • Supports the Department in mandated ESF-17 (Emergency Support Function 17) responsibilities in the event of a disaster or during an activation of the County’s Emergency Operations Center.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Health Plan: The County pays towards health insurance premiums for all employees. Employees can select from three health care plan options. Coverage is effective the first of the month following 60 days of employment.
  • Dental Insurance: Employees are eligible to enroll in the dental coverage and choose from four options: High DMO, Low DMO, a network Open Access Plan, and a PPO. Coverage is effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
  • Vision Care: Employees and their dependents are eligible to enroll in the vision coverage. Co-payment coverage includes exams, lens and frame, as well as an allowable contact lens expense. Coverage is effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
  • Employee Assistance Program: This program provides all employees and family members with professional, confidential counseling sessions. All employees and dependents are afforded up to six (6) free visits per Plan year. Coverage begins on the first day of employment.
  • Tuition Reimbursement: Employees may be reimbursed up to $1,000 (undergraduate), $2000 (graduate) per fiscal year for classes at an accredited college or university for courses that enhance your ability to perform your current job duties.
  • Holidays: Employees receive up to 12 paid holidays per year.
