IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate will have the following:
• Basic Wildland Fire training (S-130, S-190, L-180, and I-100)
• Possesses Florida pesticide license applicator license (CORE, natural areas, aquatics)
• Considerable experience working with wildland fire
• Considerable experience handling, mixing and applying herbicide in a land management context
• Experience assisting with restoration activities, particularly establishment of native species
• Experience maintaining trails and recreational improvements
• Experience using GPS units for mapping
• Skill operating heavy equipment (tractors, backhoe, etc.)
• Skill operating off-road vehicles
• Skill using hand and power tools (basic carpentry tools, chainsaw, etc.)
• Skill identifying native and invasive/exotic species in Florida
• Ability to work outdoors in all Florida seasons
• Good communication skills, decision making, and ability to follow directions

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An Associate's degree in a Natural Science; and

Possession of a valid Driver's License.

Or

An equivalent of 2 years field experience in Land Management.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Frequently requires working outdoors in outside conditions. Frequently requires extensive safety and/or protective devices.  Frequently requires exposure to moving machinery and vehicles. Frequently requires working on slippery or uneven surfaces.  Frequently requires exposure to weather including extreme heat, cold, dampness and/or humidity.  Frequently in high dust/dirt/grease in the work environment. Frequent exposure to chemicals and solvents. Occasionally works in water.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

• Working knowledge of environmental sampling and collection methods.
• Ability to follow technical directions.
• Ability to walk, climb, run, stoop, bend, stand, push, pull, lift 40 lbs. and carry heavy items.
• Ability to work outdoors year round in typical Florida conditions.
• High degree of adaptability and problem solving ability.
• Ability to operate power tools such as chain saws, trimmers, mowers, etc.
• Ability to learn the operation of tractors and similar heavy equipment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Restricted Use Pesticide License/Natural Areas category.
• Ability to attend prescribed fire-related training, and participate on prescribed burns.
• Ability to retain knowledge of preserve locations and access points.
• Ability to identify and differentiate hazardous, non-hazardous, and recyclable solid waste material.
• Good interpersonal relations skills with public and co-workers.
• Good communication skills.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

below.


• Provide maintenance of existing and future access points, trails, and park sites.
• Performs various field environmental sampling and collection duties.
• On-going hiking/equestrian/mountain bike/canoe trail maintenance.
• Conduct exotic plant control using herbicide and other methods.
• Assist with exotic/ invasive/ nuisance animal removal.
• Assist with or give guided field trips on various nature preserves.
• Assist with prescribed burns by preparing fire lanes & participating on fires.
• Assist with water quality monitoring.
• Assist with restoration activities, particularly planting of native species.
• Assist with the removal of trash from preserves.
• Post site boundaries and/or entrances with appropriate signage.
• Post kiosks of current preserve rules/regulations and upcoming events.
• Open and close gates at various nature preserves for public access.
• Fence, gate, lock, etc. installation/removal/maintenance.
• Coordinate Boy Scout/Eagle Scout projects.
• Documentation of daily activities in preserves, including plant & animal sightings.
• Performs other related duties as required.

  • Health Plan: The County pays towards health insurance premiums for all employees. Employees can select from three health care plan options. Coverage is effective the first of the month following 60 days of employment.
  • Dental Insurance: Employees are eligible to enroll in the dental coverage and choose from four options: High DMO, Low DMO, a network Open Access Plan, and a PPO. Coverage is effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
  • Vision Care: Employees and their dependents are eligible to enroll in the vision coverage. Co-payment coverage includes exams, lens and frame, as well as an allowable contact lens expense. Coverage is effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
  • Employee Assistance Program: This program provides all employees and family members with professional, confidential counseling sessions. All employees and dependents are afforded up to six (6) free visits per Plan year. Coverage begins on the first day of employment.
  • Tuition Reimbursement: Employees may be reimbursed up to $1,000 (undergraduate), $2000 (graduate) per fiscal year for classes at an accredited college or university for courses that enhance your ability to perform your current job duties.
  • Holidays: Employees receive up to 12 paid holidays per year.
