Summary Statement

This position will work with volunteers and staff to develop, organize and facilitate recreational and interpretive programming for school/group field trips and public programs at the DuPont Nature Center (DNC). This position will also interact with nature center visitors, plan and participate in special events at the DNC, and develop educational information, print media, displays and exhibits. This position will also assist with the care and maintenance of aquariums and live aquatic species.  Work may be performed outdoors under various weather conditions (biting insects, hot and cold conditions).

Essential Functions

  • Develop, prepare and facilitate educational programs about the Delaware Bay and the aquatic and wildlife species that live there (especially horseshoe crabs and shorebirds) to school groups and public visitors.
  • Develop educational materials including fact sheets, brochures and displays.
  • Interact with nature center visitors and assist them as needed (be a front-line representative of DNC).
  • Lead guided educational tours of the DuPont Nature Center.
  • Assist with the annual Peace, Love & Horseshoe Crab Festival.
  • Help plan and facilitate youth and family fishing programs.
  • Care for and maintain live animal tanks (horseshoe crabs, terrapins, fish & shellfish).
  • Assist in operation and upkeep of the nature center.
  • Answer phones as needed.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas.  

  1. Experience working with children and young adults such as academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher.
  2. Six months experience in using standard computer software programs for word processing, spreadsheets or databases.
  3. Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  4. Knowledge of curriculum development.
  5. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
