Summary Statement

The seasonal Lifeguard Position is responsible for ensuring visitors have a safe and enjoyable recreational experience.  Duties include ocean/surf rescues, supervision of swimmers and other water sport participants.  Work is performed under various weather conditions. Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all position in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.  Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Provide safe water-based recreation for park.
  • Maintains constant watch over assigned area.
  • Warns swimmers of hazards such as dangerous ocean/surf conditions.
  • Maintain the beach/water park area, to include trash and litter removal.
  • Perform appropriate ocean/surf rescues and medical services as required.
  • Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Hire

As a condition of hire applicants for this position must successfully pass a Swim/Run/Strength assessment. 

As a condition of hire applicants for this position must successfully complete an In-Service Ocean Rescue Training Course and an Emergency Medical Responder Course.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  DNREC does not provide sponsorship for holders of H-1 B Visas.

Selection Process
