Introduction

This is a reinstatement, transfer or voluntary demotion opportunity for current and former regularly appointed employees of Alameda County.

Reinstatement:
Pursuant to Civil Service Rule 1744: On the request of a department head and approval of the Commission, a regularly appointed employee who resigned in good standing may, within three years after the effective date of his/her resignation, be reinstated in a position in the class from which he/she resigned or in a position in another class for which he/she may be eligible as determined by the Commission. Appointments by reinstatement following resignation are subject to the probationary period established for the class. You must have been a classified County employee in the same job code or in a job code at the same salary maximum and left the County in good standing. In addition, you must meet the minimum and special qualifications of the specific position.

Transfer:
You must be a current County classified employee in the same job code or in a job code with the same salary maximum for which you are applying. In addition, you must meet the minimum and special qualifications of the specific position.

Voluntary Demotion:
You must be a current County classified employee in a job code which is at a higher salary maximum than the vacancy for which you are applying. In addition, you must meet the minimum and special qualifications of the specific position.

DESCRIPTION



THE AGENCY

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is a full-service law enforcement agency accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and the American Correctional Association (ACA). Additionally, the agency's health care provider, Prison Health Services, has dual accreditation through the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) and the California Medical Association (CMA). Together these form what is referred to as the "Triple Crown" of accreditation (ACA, NCCHC/CMA and CALEA) awarded by the National Sheriff's Association. Additionally, the Sheriff's Office Crime Lab is nationally accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB). The Sheriff's Office Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit has also been awarded national accreditation through the Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board.

The Sheriff's Office has a current adjusted net budget of approximately $379 million and has over 1600 authorized positions, including an excess of 1000 sworn personnel. The agency's Chief Executive Officer is Sheriff Gregory J. Ahern, who is assisted in the operation of the agency by Undersheriff Richard T. Lucia, Assistant Sheriffs Brett Keteles and Casey Nice.

THE POSITION 

This position is responsible for performing complex accounting clerical work in connection with maintaining or reviewing financial records. This position is located in Oakland in our Sheriff's Work Alternative Program (SWAP) Unit.  The duties of the Account Clerk II in the SWAP unit include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Accept fees from program participants
  • Prepare deposits and deliver them to the Treasurer’s office
  • Maintain accounting records for cash receipts and deposits
  • Process refunds
  • Maintain statistical data related to SWAP
  • Purchase supplies for SWAP
  • Communicate with County Treasury, County Auditor’s Office, County Purchasing, and other duties as assigned.  

Work days and hours are: Monday thru Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Account Clerk I or in an equivalent or higher level clerical class.

Or II

The equivalent of two years of responsible financial record keeping experience. (Completion of a bookkeeping or accounting curriculum in a recognized business or accredited junior college may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.)

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Purposes, methods, practices and terminology of financial record keeping work.
• Modern office methods and equipment.

Ability to:

• Prepare financial reports and maintain ledger for journal.
• Identify and correct errors in a variety of mathematical calculations in financial documents.
• Work independently in the absence of specific instructions.
• Operate standard office machines.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relations with the public.

SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION CRITERIA:

A. For positions requiring the ability to operate a l0-key by touch.

B. For positions requiring the ability to type at a speed of not less than 40 words per minute from clear copy.
