Building Maintenance Laborer

Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year, but can be extended.

Application and Supplemental Questionnaire:  A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application.  Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Failure to submit the Application or Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

DESCRIPTION

THE AGENCY
Alameda County's General Services Agency delivers a host of support services to County departments and agencies. These services fall into several major categories: Technical — architectural, engineering, energy and hazardous materials management; Building Maintenance — building maintenance and repairs, janitorial services and minor remodeling and alterations; Construction — new facilities and major remodeling; Procurement — purchasing and contract administration; Fleet Services; Childcare Planning; Human Resources, Payroll, Information Systems and Parking Administration.

THE POSITION
Under close supervision, to perform a variety of entry-level maintenance and minor construction tasks on buildings and grounds; to assist building trades personnel in the upkeep of County buildings and equipment; and to do related work as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications stated below, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated a track record of success in the following areas:

• Proficient in the basic maintenance and repair of electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems found in commercial buildings
• Skilled in the maintenance, storage, use and identification of tools, materials and supplies used in the maintenance and repair of commercial buildings
• Demonstrates the ability to quickly change direction from one function to another in a systematic, organized way
• Diligent in the performance of duties resulting in no detail being overlooked
• Collaborative, flexible and dependable team member who communicates well to ensure the job is done correctly
• Outstanding commitment to customer service
• Efficiently organizes tools, materials and supplies in support of higher level Trades as they perform their duties
• Finds gratification in maintaining inventory and organizing tools, materials and supplies
• Adheres to safety procedures and maintains safety awareness for self, co-workers and customers

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

The equivalent of one year of recent, full-time paid experience making a variety of minor repairs to buildings.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

Special Requirement:

Employees are required to obtain and maintain an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office security clearance.

Physical Characteristics:

May require heavy lifting, working from ladders or scaffolding, and working in confined areas.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidate will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

• Common tools, materials, equipment and methods used in carpentry, roofing, electrical, plumbing, painting and masonry trades.

Ability to:

• Use a variety of basic hand tools; e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, drills, grinders and other machine shop equipment.
• Assist in performing work in a wide variety of maintenance and construction trades.
• Follow general and detailed verbal and written instructions.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with employees and the general public.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
1) A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
2) A review of candidates' Supplemental Questionnaires to select the best qualified applicants to continue in  the process.
3) A performance written test which will be qualifying only (pass/fail).  Candidates who pass the performance written test will move forward to the next step of the exam process.
4) An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.

CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.
