INTRODUCTION

The City is seeking energized individuals to staff its PEAK and Westpark After School Programs, operating during the school year.  If you enjoy working with children, like sports, and arts & crafts, and are interested in part-time employment, this may be the opportunity you have been seeking!  The City ois continuously accepting applications for these positions.

THE POSITION

Provides on-site supervision and performs a variety of activities or specialized services in support of the City's after school programs.  These are temporary, extra-help positions, working up to 20 hours per week and paid on an hourly basis.

Recreation Leader I ($8.23-$10.00 per hour):  is a task-oriented, entry-level position, working under direct supervision, and requiring no prior experience.

Recreation Leader II ($9.88-$12.00 per hour):  is an experienced, working-level support position.

Recreation Specialist ($10.00-$15.00 per hour):  provides specialized services requiring extensive knowledge, talent, or advanced experience in After School Programs. 

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM POSITION DESCRIPTIONS

  • Youth Site Specialist: (Recreation Specialist). Is responsible for planning, managing, and assisting with the development and organization of after-school activities, homework, special programs and staff development.
  • Recreation Support Staff: (Recreation Leader I/II). Plans, organizes, after-school activities such as homework assistance, sports, games, and special programs.
  • Youth Sports Support Staff:  (Recreation Leader II/Specialist). Is responsible for planning sports curriculums and implementing the sports programs at the after-school program sites.
  • Youth Drama Support Staff:  (Recreation Leader II/Specialist).  Is responsible for planning curriculums in theatre drama productions at the after-school program sites.
  • Youth Music Support Staff:  (Recreation Leader II/Specialist).  Is responsible for planning curriculums in a variety of music and teaching at the sites of the after-school programs.
  • Youth Dance Support Staff:  (Recreation Leader II/Specialist).  Is responsible for planning curriculum in a variety of dance and teaching at the sites of the after-school programs.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate Will...

  • Enjoy working with children of different backgrounds and ages.
  • Be knowledgeable of a variety of activities and sports for children.
  • Be organized and able to communicate clearly.
  • Be reliable, dependable, and available for 15 to 20 hours per week, during the after school timeframe.
  • Be fair and impartial in the application of City rules and policies.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES

  • Possession of a California Class C driver's license is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities is required.   

BENEFITS

Employment Information:  Right to Work:  Before employment, candidates must submit documentation verifying their legal right to work in the United States.  Background Check:  A pre-employment verification of background may be conducted.  Probationary Period:  This is an ‘At-Will’ position, subject to termination at any time, without notice or right of appeal. 

Temporary Appointment Status:  Extra Help:  May work up to 999 hours per fiscal year.  Limited Term:  May work over 999 hours per fiscal year up to 18 months.  Extended Term:  May work over 999 hours per fiscal year 18 months – 3 year maximum.

Direct Deposit:  Paychecks are automatically deposited into employee bank accounts.

Wellness Program:  A comprehensive program is available, including on-site gym, classes, downtown/beach walking routes, weight loss, and tips on nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Retirement:  In lieu of Social Security, Temporary, Extra-help employees, not currently CalPERS members, are enrolled in the City’s Part-time, Temporary, and Seasonal Employee 457 Deferred Compensation retirement plan.  If you are a CalPERS member, please notify Human Resources at the time you are hired and your retirement contributions will be handled in accordance with the City’s CalPERS contract.  If you are a CalPERS retiree, please contact CalPERS to discuss the impact that your employment in this position would have on your pension benefit.  Receiving a CalPERS benefit may affect your Social Security upon retirement.  For further information, contact a Social Security office or go to www.socialsecurity.gov/form1945.

Limited Term or Extended Term employees will be enrolled in CalPERS.  The City contracts for the 2% at 55, Single Highest Year formula.

Other Benefits:  Temporary employees are not eligible for vacation, holidays, sick leave or any other benefits provided to regular employees.
