INTRODUCTION

The City of Ventura is seeking people to officiate at youth and adult sports programs.  If you enjoy sports, are knowledgeable of the "rules of the game," and interested in part-time employment, this may be the opportunity for you.  Apply today.

THE POSITION

Under supervision, officiates at a variety of City sports programs. Officials maintain control of the game, use good judgment to make the appropriate call, and maintain a professional appearance and attitude.  Safety of the players is paramount and must be maintained at all times. 

This is a temporary, part-time job and paid on a per game basis.  Sports Officials wear uniforms and  work on weekends, evenings and holidays.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Officiates at City sports events, games and matches in a fair and impartial manner.  Oversees events to ensure that they are controlled, safe and orderly.  Promotes good sportsmanship among participants. Resolves conflicts and participant disputes.

Protects equipment and facilities.  Ensures that equipment is returned after usage.  Inspects equipment and reports safety issues.

Performs related duties as assigned. 

 

KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: principles and techniques of good sportsmanship; the rules and regulations of each sport assigned to officiate; and techniques of sports officiating.

Ability to: conduct and officiate team sports in a fair and impartial manner; demonstrate patience and understanding when working with participants of diverse ages and backgrounds; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships; resolve conflicts and participant disputes; and exercise independent judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates proficiency in the sport to be officiated, OR,  the ability to be trained to apply the appropriate rules of the applicable sport, is required. Experience as a sports official, coach, or scorekeeper in the particular sport is highly desirable.

Employment Information:  Right to Work:  Before employment, candidates must submit documentation verifying their legal right to work in the United States.  Background Check:  A pre-employment verification of background may be conducted.  Probationary Period:  This is an 'At Will' position, subject to termination at any time, without notice or right of appeal.

Temporary Appointment Status:  Extra Help: May work up to 999 hours per fiscal year. Limited Term: May work over 999 hours per fiscal year up to 18 months. Extended Term: May work over 999 hours per fiscal year 18 months - 3 year maximum. 

Direct Deposit: Paychecks are automatically deposited to employee accounts.

Retirement:  In lieu of Social Security, Temporary, Extra-Help employees, not currently CalPERS members, are enrolled in the City's Part-time, Temporary, and Seasonal Employee 457 Deferred Compensation retirement plan.  If you are a CalPERS member, please notify Human Resources at the time you are hired and your retirement contributions will be handled in accordance with the City's CalPERS contract.  If you are a CalPERS retiree, please contact PERS to discuss the impact that employment in this position would have on your pension benefit.  Receiving a CalPERS benefit may affect your Social Security upon retirement.  For further information, contact a Social Security office or go to www.socialsecurity.gov/form1945.

Limited Term or Extended Term employees will be enrolled in CalPERS.  The City contracts for the 2% at 55, Single Highest Year formula.   

Other Benefits: Temporary employees are not eligible for vacation, holidays, sick leave or any other benefits provided to regular employees.
