The Position

Administrative Secretaries provide responsible administrative support to the daily operations of a division manager, department head, or superior; handle a variety of sensitive and/or complex administrative matters using independent judgment in applying established practices and procedures; perform a wide variety of clerical, secretarial, and word processing duties; type, file, and distribute a variety of docu­ments; respond to requests for information from board members, supervisory staff or public; perform related duties as required.

As an Administrative Secretary, you will perform a variety of complex administrative support duties as a primary and continuing part of assigned responsibility to division manager or superior.  You may be responsible for on-going or re-occurring projects, supervising the work of clerical support staff, and/or secretarial work which require the application of specialized knowledge (such as document preparation and processing procedures). Incumbents have broad latitude in decision making and frequently make decisions without review.

The current vacancies exist in the Health and Social Services Department and the Public Defender's Office for regular positions.

 

The eligible list created as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill full-time and part-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur throughout the County.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education/Training:  

High school diploma or GED  

 

AND

 

Experience:

 

Three (3) years of full-time work experience in an administrative capacity supporting a professional or management position, including three (3) months experience working with and supporting a management or professional position that demonstrates possession of and competency in the requisite knowledge and abilities. OR

 

Three (3) years of full-time work experience as an Office Assistant III in Solano County.

 

 

BENEFITS

Solano County offers a comprehensive benefit package to full and part-time employees which includes a cafeteria-style medical package with health benefits offered through CalPERS. The County contributes 75% of the Kaiser family rate for the Bay area for coverage that begins the first of the month following date of hire. The County offers a cash back provision for those who choose employee-only medical coverage or those who waive medical insurance coverage. Dental and vision insurances for the employee and eligible dependents are paid 100% by the County.

Solano County participates in CalPERS retirement, and contributes to Social Security.

Vacation is accrued at approximately 10 days per year for the first 78 full time pay periods (approximately 3 years). Sick leave accrues at approximately 12 days per year. Additionally, the County observes 12 fixed, paid holidays per year.

Selection Process

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the best qualified applicants will be invited for further examination. 1.  A keyboarding (typing) certificate verifying a minimum corrected NET speed of 50 words per minute (please note: must be a timed 3 - 5 minute test & include the gross number of words typed per minute & the number of errors)

2.  An Intermediate Word Processing Certificate verifying skills at 70% or above

3.  An Intermediate Excel Spreadsheet Certificate verifying skills at 70% or above

The certificates may not be more than (12) months old at the time of application; they must be from an accredited school or other agency and include test date and examiner's signature.  Online test certificates will not be accepted. Failure to submit these certificates by the final filing date will disqualify you from further consideration in the recruitment process.

Certificate Testing

Solano County is also offering Word, Excel and typing testings at no cost on July 31, 2015 from 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM for the Administrative Secretary recruitment only. Seating is very limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

Veterans Preference Points
