The Position

The Correctional Officer (Entry) learns to perform a variety of tasks to supervise and control inmates in a detention facility.

The current vacancy exists in the Sheriff's Office for a full-time, regular position.

The eligible list created as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill part-time and full-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises. 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience: No experience required, however, applicants must demonstrate possession of and competency in requisite knowledge and abilities.

background: A Peace Officer Standard & Training (POST)  background investigation is required prior to the start of employment. A Personal History Statement (PHS) is a part of this investigation. BENEFITS

The County offers a cash back provision for those who choose employee-only or who waive medical insurance coverage.

n Vacation is accrued at approximately 10 days per year for the first 3 years. Sick leave accrues at approximately 12 days per year.

8/25/15 & 8/26/15 - Written Examination Sessions. The date and time of the written exam will depend on the session the applicant signs up for during the self-schedule process.

Supplemental Information

  • Incumbents of this class should demonstrate necessary knowledge and abilities to be promoted to Correctional Officer within 18 months of appointment.
  • Incumbents must be able to work in a closed, stressful and noisy environment which may include exposure to communicable disease, violent behavior and involve heavy manual labor associated with inmate control tasks which may include lifting people weighing more than 100 pounds and the full range of reaching, bending, grasping and climbing movements.
  • Incumbents may be required to work outside normal business hours.
  • Candidates for positions in this class will be required to pass a background investigation in accordance with applicable law, regulation and/or policy.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California Driver's License is required.
  • Positions allocated to this class may require bilingual skills.

Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible, applicants must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A copy of the DD214, showing discharge type, must be received in the Human Resources Department by the final filing date.

Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general discharge under honorable conditions shall have five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans (rated at not less than 30% disability) shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score. Veteran preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
