The Position

Public Safety Dispatchers in the Sheriff's Office assist community members and agencies with emergency needs by receiving and dispatching calls received for law enforcement, fire service, and emergency medical service personnel.  In 2014 Solano County Dispatchers received approximately 135,000 non-emergency calls and approximately 17,000 911 calls. Public Safety Dispatchers receive caller information, relay information to appropriate units or agencies, and provide assistance to callers as needed. Additionally, Public Safety Dispatchers log call information into the computer; monitor activity of all public safety units to determine status of incidents and location of units.

The current vacancy exists in the Sheriff's Office for a regular full-time position.

The eligible list created as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill part-time and full-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

EXPERIENCE: One year of emergency service dispatching which included responsibility for dispatching for law enforcement or fire services; AND

education: High school diploma or equivalent; AND

certification: A net keyboard typing speed of 40 WPM is required.

BENEFITS

n Solano County offers a cafeteria-style medical package with health benefits, offered through CalPERS. The County contribution for family coverage for the 2015 calendar year is $1,393.18 per month. The County offers a cash back provision for those who choose employee-only or who waive medical insurance coverage.

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants will be invited for further examination. Document Submittal Requirements

This position requires submittal of a valid typing certificate. All candidates must submit a copy of their typing certificate within 5 days from the date of application submittal. Failure to submit the required certificates will result in immediate disqualification from further consideration in the recruitment process.

Certificate Requirements

A typing certificate must show a net typing speed of 40 WPM. It may not be more than 12 months old at the time of application, must be from an accredited school or a qualified agency, and must contain the examiner’s signature. Certificates obtained through the internet (online) will not be accepted.

Certificate Testing 
The County is offering a typing test at no cost on April 13, 2015 from 8:15am-9:30am for the Public Safety Dispatcher recruitment only. This is the only date available and space is limited.

Interested applicants who have completed and submitted the online application should email recruitment@solanocounty.com to sign up for a slot by 5pm, Thursday, April 9, 2015.

If applicants are unable to attend the County testing, applicants must still submit a copy of a valid certificate by the final filing deadline. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for how to obtain a typing certificate.

Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible, applicants must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A copy of the DD214, showing discharge type, must be received in the Human Resources Department within 5 days of application submittal. Applicants who have a service connected disability must submit  a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service connected reasons. 

 

Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general discharge under honorable conditions shall have five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans (rated at not less than 30% disability) shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score. Veteran preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
