The Position

Solano County invites you to apply for a challenging, fast paced, rewarding career as a Public Safety Dispatcher (Entry).  In this position you learn to receive, evaluate and relay requests for law enforcement, emergency and other services to the appropriate personnel.  This position is characterized by the responsibility to learn to dispatch law enforcement and emergency service personnel and to call for mutual aid assistance.  Incumbents learn to operate equipment contained in a public safety dispatch console, which includes multi-line telephones, TTY (teletype), TDD (telephone for deaf and disabled), pagers, radios and computer-aided dispatch equipment; techniques of acquiring essential information from emergency calls and  prioritizing requests for assistance; law enforcement terminology and public safety dispatch procedures.

The current recruitment is to fill full-time regular positions; however, the eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill part-time and full-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises.

POSTION REQUIREMENTS

Experience: No experience required.

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent. 

Certificates: A net keyboard typing speed of 40 WPM is required. For more information on this required certificate please see the "Document Submittal Requirements" section below.

BENEFITS

  • Solano County offers a cafeteria-style medical package with health benefits, offered through CalPERS. The County contribution for family coverage for the 2015 calendar year is $1,393.18 per month. The County offers a cash back provision for those who choose employee-only or who waive medical insurance coverage.

  • Solano County participates in CalPERS retirement and contributes to Social Security.  
  • Vacation is accrued at approximately 10 days per year for the first 3 years. Sick leave accrues at approximately 12 days per year.

4/22/15 - 8:30am-10:30am County Typing Test, please see "Document Submittal Requirements" below for more information about testing for the required certificate.

4/27/15 - Deadline to submit application and required typing certificate.

5/13 - 5/19/15 - Tentative dates for Mandatory Information Session and Written Exam.

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants will be invited for further examination. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a written and/or practical exam, an oral interview, or any combination listed. A minimum score of 70% is required to continue in the selection process.

Document Submittal Requirements

This position requires submittal of a valid typing certificate. All candidates must submit a copy of their typing certificate by the final filing deadline. Failure to submit the required certificates will result in immediate disqualification from further consideration in the recruitment process.

Certificate Requirements

A typing certificate must show a net typing speed of 40 WPM. It may not be more than 12 months old at the time of application, must be from an accredited school or a qualified agency, and must contain the examiner’s signature. Certificates obtained through the internet (online) will not be accepted.

Certificate Testing 

The County is offering a typing test at no cost on April 22, 2015 from 8:30am-10:30am for the Public Safety Dispatcher (Entry) recruitment only. This is the only date available and space is limited.

Interested applicants who have completed and submitted the online application should email recruitment@solanocounty.com to sign up for a slot by 5pm, Monday, April 20, 2015.

If applicants are unable to attend the County testing, applicants must still submit a copy of a valid certificate by the final filing deadline. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for how to obtain a typing certificate.

Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible, applicants must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A copy of the DD214, showing discharge type, must be received in the Human Resources Department by the final filing date. 

 

Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general discharge under honorable conditions shall have five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans (rated at not less than 30% disability) shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score. Veteran preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
