The Position

Public Safety Dispatchers in the Sheriff's Office assist community members and agencies with emergency needs by receiving and dispatching calls received for law enforcement, fire service, and emergency medical service personnel.  In 2012 Solano County Dispatchers received 112,000 calls. Public Safety Dispatchers receive caller information, relay information to appropriate unit or agency, and provide assistance to callers as needed. Additionally, Public Safety Dispatchers log call information into computer; monitor activity of all public safety units to determine status of incident and location of units.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

Experience: One year of emergency service dispatching which included responsibility for dispatching for law enforcement or fire services.

 

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

BENEFITS

Solano County offers a comprehensive benefit package to full and part-time employee which includes a cafeteria-style medical package with health benefits, offered through CalPERS. Medical insurance is effective the first of the month following date of hire.  The County contribution for family coverage for the 2014 calendar year is $1,448.30 per month. If the medical plan costs are less than $1,448.30 per month, employees will receive the difference as taxable earnings to a maximum of $334.58. The County offers a cash back provision for those who choose employee-only or who waive medical insurance coverage. Dental and vision insurances for the employee and eligible dependents are paid 100% by the County.  

Solano County participates in CalPERS retirement and contributes to Social Security.  

Vacation is accrued at approximately 10 days per year for the first 78 full-time pay periods (approximately three years). Sick leave accrues at approximately 12 days per year. Additionally, the County observes 12 fixed, paid holidays per year.  

Employees are eligible to receive an additional 2.5% longevity pay, per level, after the completion of continuous service at 10, 20, 25, and 30 years.

Document Submittal Requirements

This position requires submittal of a valid typing certificate by the final filing deadline. All candidates must submit a copy of their typing certificate by the final filing date with a document cover sheet, available on the employment website or at the Department of Human Resources’ office.  Failure to submit the required certificate(s) will result in immediate disqualification from further consideration in the recruitment process.

Certificate Requirements: The certificate must contain a minimum corrected NET speed of 40 words per minute.  It must be a timed 3 - 5 minute test, include the gross number of words typed per minute, and the number of errors.  It may not be more than 12 months old at the time of application, must be from an accredited school or a qualified agency, and must contain the examiner's signature.  Certificate obtained through the internet (online) will not be accepted.

 

Certificate Testing: The County is offering a Typing Test at no charge on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 9:00am-11:30am for the Public Safety Dispatcher recruitment only.  Interested applicants must contact the Department of Human Resources to sign up at (707) 784-3405. This is the only date available. If applicants are unable to attend the County certificate testing applicants must still submit a copy of a valid typing certificate by the final filing deadline.

Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible, applicants must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A copy of the DD214, showing discharge type, must be received in the Human Resources Department by the final filing date.

 

Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general discharge under honorable conditions shall have five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans (rated at not less than 30% disability) shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score. Veteran preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
