The Public Health Laboratory Program is very critical to the function of the Public Health and Environmental Programs of Solano County. Our lab emphasizes services to support epidemiologic investigations and programs to prevent and control infectious diseases and pollution of air, water, and food.  It supports disease prevention, which tends to keep hospital beds and clinic visits to a minimum. The specimens for release of cases or carrier of the following communicable diseases are sent to the public health laboratory:  Amoebiasis, Diphtheria, Plague, Animal Rabies, Salmonellosis, Shigellosis, Typhoid Fever, Tuberculosis, and Sexually Transmitted Disease.

The Position

The Public Health Laboratory Technician assists the Public Health Microbiologists by preparing equipment supplies and culture media and performing or initiating routine biological tests; weighs, prepares, and sterilizes culture media and reagents for testing and performs courier services.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience:

Some laboratory experience desirable.      

Education/Training:

High school diploma or equivalent with vocational or technical school training in environmental technology, chemistry, biology or related field.    

Special Requirements:  Independent travel may be required. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver’s license may be required.  

Candidates for employment may be required to sign a statement agreeing to comply with Section 11166 of the California Penal Code relating to child abuse reporting as a condition of employment.   

BENEFITS

Solano County offers a comprehensive benefit package to full and part-time employees which includes a cafeteria-style medical package with health benefits offered through CalPERS. Health insurance is effective the first of the month following the date of hire.

The County contributes 75% of the Kaiser family rate for the Bay area. Dental and vision insurances for the employee and eligible dependents are paid 100% by the County.  

Solano County participates in CalPERS retirement, and contributes to Social Security.   Vacation is accrued at approximately 10 days per year for the first 78 full time pay periods (approximately 3 years). Sick leave accrues at approximately 12 days per year. Additionally, the County observes 12 fixed, paid holidays per year.

Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible, applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions.  A COPY OF THE DD 214, SHOWING DISCHARGE TYPE, MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT WITHIN FIVE (5) DAYS FROM THE DATE OF APPLICATION.  Applicants who have a service connected disability must submit a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service connected reasons.  Disability must be rated at least 10% to be eligible for disabled veteran's points.
