The Position

Animal Control Officers ensure compliance with State and local codes and regulations that govern the control of livestock and domestic animals, and participate in the county-wide rabies control program.

This is the entry/journey level class requiring limited time on the job before an incumbent is capable of functioning at the full journey level. Incumbent initially works under immediate supervision, progressing to independent supervision as the incumbent becomes able to independently perform the full range of duties associated with this class.

This recruitment is intended to fill Extra-Help positions.  Extra-help employees do not receive or accrue benefits, do not have rights to a regular position or continued employment and are excluded from civil service.  The hours worked may be part-time or full-time, but they cannot work more than 999 hours in a fiscal year.

 

The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill part-time and full-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises.  

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Experience: Six months work experience in the care and/or control of animals in an animal control/care agency, a Humane Society, a veterinary clinic, a shelter and/or equivalent animal care facility.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License
  • Successful completion of the training course specified in Section 832 of the Penal Code pertaining to arrests, search and seizure laws and the use of firearms, is required within the first six months of appointment. 

BENEFITS

Extra-help employees do not receive or accrue benefits of regular employees during their period of employment.

Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible, applicants must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A copy of the DD214, showing discharge type, must be received in the Human Resources Department by the final filing date.

 

Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general discharge under honorable conditions shall have five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans (rated at not less than 30% disability) shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score. Veteran preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
