Zoo Program & Volunteer Coordinator

Introduction

This temporary recruitment is being given to fill 4 positions in the Parks and Recreation Division of the General Services Department and to create a referral list to fill future vacancies. Candidates must be available to work weekends, holidays, and various shifts. 

Canididates must pass fingerprinting as mandated by state law. California state law requires all public recreation program employees to submit to fingerprinting for the purpose of obtaining a summary of criminal convictions.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Plans, organizes, assigns, and coordinates teen volunteer work schedules, including animal feeding, cleaning animal pens, and exercising animals; maintains facilities; maintains work schedules. 
  • Supervises and trains teen volunteers in the proper handling of animals, and to provide animal care. 
  • Maintains volunteer records, Critter Corral signage, and daily visitor use records. 
  • Maintains and makes repairs to Critter Corral as needed; ensures work is done correctly; identifies and solves problems. 
  • Observes and examines animals for signs of illness, injury, nervousness, or unnatural behavior, and reports illness, disease or injury. 
  • Communicates with zoo management on the condition of equipment and animals; makes request for supplies. 
  • Monitors public and feed storage areas to ensure cleanliness and safety.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience:  Six months paid or volunteer experience as a program leader, counselor, teacher, or assistant working with groups in an educational, recreational or other social program.  Completed coursework in animal husbandry, zoology, animal science, or working in a farm environment is desirable.

     

    Substitution:  Completion of 30 semester units at an accredited college or university including at least six semester units in the social, behavioral, or environmental sciences, may substitute for the above-required experience.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Various domesticated animals; basic public relations principles; basic computer and modern office automation technology; record keeping; principles and practices of public relations; basic supervision and coordination of volunteer programs.

    ABILITY

    Supervise, assign, schedule, and train volunteers; understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; maintain records; operate computers and standard office equipment; read and interpret park rules and regulations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Operation of a data entry device, constant walking and standing for long periods, pushing/pulling, bending, squatting, crawling, driving; Lifting-Frequently 5-50 pounds; Vision-Good overall vision, color perception, depth perception; reading and close-up work; normal hand and eye coordination; good field of vision/peripheral; Dexterity-Normal dexterity and repetitive motion; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing and talking on the telephone/radio and in person; Special Requirements-Working weekends and holidays; may require overtime evening work; Emotional/Psychological-Frequent public contact and decision making; frequent concentration required; Environmental-Frequent exposure to noise, cold/heat, hazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, and varied weather conditions.

    Selection Procedures

    Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

    Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

    Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

    • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

    • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

    Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
