This recruitment is being conducted to fill one (1) per diem vacancy in San Joaquin General Hospital's Labor & Delivery Department. and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. The Childbirth Educator will be responsible in developing and implementing health education programs to patients planning to give birth by providing increased awareness and knowledge of the labor process, labor anesthesia and vaginal/cesarean section delivery. Incumbents will also address parental issues such as safety, CPR, sibling preparation, and growth development and will keep up-to-date program material on changes in labor and delivery technology and practices and will support staff education in the maternal child departments.

TYPICAL DUTIES

• Responsible for the development and presentation of curriculum for prenatal education classes for expectant mothers and their families or support person(s) by identifying materials needed for course enhancement and possesses the skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial and safety appropriate to the neonate, infant, child, adolescent and adult patient population

• Ensures course curriculum reflects current practices and upholds commitment for providing evidenced based education by maintaining a strong knowledge-base in specific class education and remaining current on prenatal and perinatal education trends

• Creates and supports a community connection with physicians and community members by serving as the hospital’s liaison with various committees and health care fairs to promote healthy pregnancy, prepared childbirth, and breastfeeding

• Prepares and maintains class education rosters and reports statistical data on attendance records, scheduling and financing of orientating expectant families pre- and post-partum and will assist in developing outreach strategies and ideas for growth and class participant feedback

• Coordinates and conducts monthly hospital tours of the maternal child areas by maintaining calendared scheduled tours, informational packets, and daily phone calls

• Works in partnership with community perinatal health partners and various local and national childbirth organizations in promoting breastfeeding and pre- and post-natal care programs offered by the hospital

• Gathers and maintains program data for purposes of obtaining educational grant funding from prenatal care programs, lactation training and other departmental projects related to prenatal care

• Provides and participates in training of hospital nursing and other staff in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other lifesaving interventions

• May serve as the agency’s perinatal loss representative by providing grief support to families and offer information on community resources that provide coping assistance

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

Experience: Two (2) years experience working in the maternal and child health field in which one (1) year includes registered nursing experience with a Labor & Delivery department, with a broad base knowledge in childbirth and lactation education.

                                                                           OR II

 
Education: Possession a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field.

Experience: One (1) year registered nursing experience working in a labor & delivery department, with a broad base knowledge in childbirth and lactation education.

                                                                            And

Licenses and Certificates: Current registration as a nurse in the State of California and must successfully complete the following courses within the first six (6) months of employment: Fetal Heart Monitoring Class, Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring Class, Neonatal Resuscitation Class, and Preceptor Class or equivalent.

Special Requirement: Must possess a nationally recognized certification in childbirth education (ICEA, Lamaze, Maternal/Child National Certification or approved equivalent) within first (1) year of employment.

KNOWLEDGE

Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, range of treatment, and care of patients as per Scope of Service; stays current on prenatal and perinatal education trends; understands principles of adult education and demonstrates a strong understanding of adult learning principles by utilizing a variety of visual aids, charts, lectures, and physical demonstrations of breathing patterns and relaxation techniques; complies with applicable regulatory policies/procedures. Demonstrates strong knowledge of word processing programs and utilizes for presentation and information sharing purposes; possesses organizational skills and ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision.

ABILITY

Understand and support the goals and mission of the Family Maternity Center at San Joaquin General Hospital, demonstrates interpersonal skills to successfully interact with patients, guests, physicians, and other employees; lead group discussion and manage group behavior appropriately; teaches in an effective and understandable manner for the public and staff; demonstrate leadership ability and administrative skills, including written and oral communication, develop reports, education, documentation requirements and service coordination; work with patients who may be grieving a loss; work in an environment that provides patient care to a culturally diverse population; ability to work flexible schedules and meet project deadlines.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility-Constant walking; frequent operation of  a keyboard; standing for long periods of time, pushing/pulling, bending and squatting; occasional sitting for long periods of time, running, climbing stairs and climbing; Frequency of Lifting-Frequent restraining lifting/turning of heavy objects or people; Visual Requirements-Constant need for overall vision, color and depth perception, hand/eye coordination, and field of vision/peripheral vision; frequent reading and close up work; Dexterity-Frequent holding, reaching, grasping, repetitive motion and writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing of normal speech; frequent hearing and talking on telephone or radio; occasional hearing of faint sounds and talking over public address; Emotional/Psychological Factors-Constant concentration and public contact; occasional exposure to hazardous materials, frequent exposure emergency situations, including trauma, grief and death, decision making, working weekends and nights; occasional work at heights, working alone and overtimeEnvironmental Conditions-Frequent exposure to assaultive behavior by clients; occasional exposure to noise, cold/heat, and hazardous materials, dirt, dust, smoke, fumes and poor ventilation.

Selection Procedures

Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

  • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

  • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
