Employees holding Advanced POST certificate receive additional 10% of base salary bi-weekly. This examination is being given to vacancies as they occur in the Sheriff’s Department. TYPICAL DUTIES: The Deputy Sheriff II is the journey level class in the Deputy Sheriff series. The Deputy Sheriff II patrols county areas and enforces laws; responds to a variety of reports of law violations; conducts investigations of crimes; gathers and protects evidence; interviews witnesses and complainants; conducts coroner’s investigations to establish cause, time, and place of death and identification of deceased; arrests suspected law violators or persons wanted on warrants or court orders; transports prisoners to jail; serves as bailiff of the superior courts; transports prisoners to and from courts; supervises prisoners in a variety of activities at detention facilities; books and releases prisoners; maintain discipline; serves and executes civil processes; classifies and identifies fingerprints; photographs objects related to investigations; patrols county waterways in boats; responds to and investigates reports of law violations and accidents; issues citations; may testify at hearings and trials; .prepares incident, arrest, investigation and related reports and may administer first aid. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER I Experience: One year of experience with San Joaquin County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office in the class of Deputy Sheriff I. OR II Education: Graduation from high school, or satisfactory completions of a high school G.E.D test. Scores must meet standards established by the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. Experience: At least one year of full-time paid work experience as a Deputy Sheriff in a California County Sheriff’s Department, as a Police Officer in an incorporated California City Police Department, or as a State Traffic Officer in the California Highway Patrol. AND License & Certificates: Possession of a valid California driver’s license and a Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training. Knowledge of: Law enforcement practices, procedures, and resources; laws and ordinances of the county and state; general law enforcement, patrol, and investigative practices and techniques; principles and methods of interviewing and interrogation; procedures and laws governing obtaining and preservation of evidence; methods of personal identification used in law enforcement; human behavior; public relations techniques; first aid; use and care of firearms; police report writing techniques; language usage and mechanics; court procedures. Ability to: Enforce laws and ordinances with firmness, tact, and fairness; evaluate situations and determine appropriate courses of action; record observations clearly and accurately; understand and follow oral and written instructions; express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; react quickly and calmly in emergencies; read and understand legal and other job related material, work effectively with prisoners, fellow officers, public officials, and the general public.
