APPOINTMENT TYPE:  Provisional

Provisional appointees must be successful in the Civil Service examination for this classification in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three years.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Public Health’s Facilities and Maintenance Division is accepting applications for class 2736 Porter. Positions may be located at any of the following locations:

1.    Laguna Honda Hospital’s Environmental Services Department

2.    San Francisco General Hospital’s Environmental Services Department

3.    Department of Public Health’s Facilities and Maintenance Department

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The Porter performs a wide variety of janitorial and related tasks in a hospital or clinical setting. Essential functions may include:  sweeping, mopping, waxing and buffing floors using commercial detergent solvents and special equipment; emptying, cleaning and relining trash receptacles; vacuuming and shampooing carpets; dusting window sills, over-bed light and patient tables; cleaning kitchens, food service preparation areas and public elevators; checking and replacing special needle containers; bagging and transporting medical/hazardous waste pursuant to state and federal regulations; cleaning, sanitizing and washing down occupied public and patient bathrooms, bathtubs, showers and replenishing paper towels, soap and toilet paper; transporting soiled linen, trash carts, equipment, supplies and furniture between offices and various building sites; assisting in setup up tables, chairs and equipment for meeting rooms and special functions; and providing delivery service as needed. The Porter also performs related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Employees may be required to work night or evening shifts, weekends and holidays. A Shift differential for work performed on designated evening and night shifts will be paid in accordance to the Collective Bargaining Agreement between and for SEIU Local 260 and the City and County of San Francisco.

Using approved safety precautions, the 2736 Porter is expected to perform cleaning activities requiring exposure to hazardous cleaning chemicals, blood and body fluids and other medical wastes and/or patients with contagious diseases, utilizing special protective clothing and/or equipment. These positions require repetitive strength and stamina in heavy lifting, standing, bending, pulling and pushing for extended hours throughout the day and/or night.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Six (6) months (equivalent to 1040 hours) verifiable paid full time custodial or janitorial experience at a commercial building such as an office building, warehouse, retail or wholesale store, or non-profit agency or a commercial facility (such as a university, hospital, stadium, auditorium, hotel/motel, etc.) OR

2.  Certificate of Completion of a Custodial Training Program equivalent to those certified by the City and County of San Francisco Human Services Agency; OR

3.  Verification of current enrollment in a Custodial Training course equivalent to those certified by the City and County of San Francisco Human Services Agency at the time of application.

NOTE:  Candidates who are enrolled in a custodial training course at the time of application must submit verification of having completed the course (e.g. a copy of their certificate), prior to appointment. Candidates will remain under waiver until such time that verification is provided.

  • Community Housing Partnership, Property Management/ Maintenance Program
  • Self Help for the Elderly, Housekeeping Program
  • Goodwill Industries Community Jobs Program (CJP) in a Janitor work assignment.
  • CRDC -  Career Resources Development Center’s Maintrain Program
  • Toolworks Janitorial Training

SELECTION PROCEDURES:                                                    

The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluation qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Conviction History

As part of the selection process an image of your fingerprints will be captured and sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) history will disqualify you as a candidate based on the specific requirements of the position to which you are applying. Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
