9920 Public Service Aide - Assistant to Professionals

Division: Transit

Appointment Type: Temporary exempt as-needed appointment not to exceed six (6) months or 1040 hours. Exempt employees are considered “at will” and serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.


Position Description: 

The SFMTA’s Transit division is responsible for assuring the delivery of transit service to customers, citizens, and visitors of San Francisco. The division is comprised of a diverse complement of transit professionals, maintenance and craft personnel, administrative personnel, and managers. These professionals work at various support units/sections located throughout the city.


Under minimum supervision, the 9920 Public Service Aide assigned to SFMTA’s Transit division will assist in the performance of a variety of duties related to the functions of the assigned unit. The essential functions of this job include: carrying out complex tasks on a limited basis in direct support of professional level personnel including supervisors and managers; may include responsibility for researching and compiling data; assisting in the preparation of related reports and documents; assisting in the implementation of programs; assisting in the investigation of issues and matters.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Two (2) years (60 semester units/90 quarter units) of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university.

SUBSTITUTION: Applicants may substitute up to two (2) years of the required education with two (2) years full time paid administrative work experience in functional areas including office/operations management or contract/budget administration. One year of additional qualifying experience will be considered equivalent to 30 semester units/45 quarter units.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Possession of strong interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills.
  • Computer-literate with software experience covering wide variety of applications.
  • Ability to work in a large multi-faceted organization/department.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to handle a large number of assignment and tasks with different priorities and varying deadlines.

Applicants may be required to submit verification (proof) of qualifying experience and education at a later date. Verification of experience, if requested, must be on the employer’s letterhead and must show the name of the applicant, job title(s), duties, dates of service, and must be signed by the employer. City employment may be verified by submitting a performance evaluation in lieu of other verification. City and county employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which appointed. Credit for experience obtained outside of the employee’s class will only be allowed if recorded in accordance with the provisions of Civil Service Commission Rules. Verification may be waived if impossible to obtain. Waiver requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Failure to submit the required verification or request for waiver when requested will result in disqualification.

Selection Procedure:

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.


All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, typically a 7.5% of compensation.
