Temporary-Exempt/As-Needed: Temporary exempt as-needed appointments may not exceed 1040 hours within a continuous 12-month period.

Under supervision, the College Summer Interns will assist in the performance of a variety of duties related to the functions of the assigned Airport Commission sections. Duties may include: performing complex tasks on a limited basis in direct support of professional and skilled staff; researching and compiling data; assisting in the preparation of reports and documents; assisting in the implementation of programs, and other duties as assigned. A few Airport sections participating in this program include: Airport Operations; Aviation Security; Emergency Operations; Landside; Museums – Library; Noise Abatement Office; Operations Management; Revenue Development and Management.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Full-Time, Summer only internship, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. These positions may require occasional work during evenings, weekends or shift hours depending on assignment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current enrollment in an accredited college undergraduate program (sophomore or above).
2. Knowledge of Computer Software including the MS Office Suite.
3. Excellent telephone and communication skills.
4. Ability to work independently.

VERIFICATION:
Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying experience, education and training, license, etc. at any point in the application, examination or departmental selection process. A copy of the diploma or transcripts must be submitted to verify the education requirement when requested. Verification of qualifying experience, when requested, must be on the employer’s letterhead and must show the name of the applicant, job title(s), duties, dates of service, and must be signed by the employer. City employment must be verified by submitting a performance evaluation in lieu of other verification. City and county employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which appointed. Credit for experience obtained outside the employee’s class will only be allowed if recorded in accordance with the provisions of Civil Services Commission Rules. Experience claimed in self-employment will only be accepted if supported by documents verifying income, earnings, business license and experience comparable to minimum qualifications above. Copies of income tax papers or other documents listing occupation and total earnings must be submitted. Verification may be waived if impossible to obtain. Waiver requests will not automatically be granted, but will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

SELECTION PROCEDURES:

Screening of Applications:
Applications will be screened for relevant qualifying experience and education. Additional mechanisms may be implemented in order to determine candidate’s qualifications. Only those applicants who most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited to continue in the selection process. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement in the process.

Oral/Performance Examination:
Candidates will be tested to determine their relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job related areas. Candidates may be required to perform a written exercise as part of the oral/performance.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission whose job duties require unescorted Air Operations Area (AOA) access or sterile area access will be required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and will be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

BENEFITS

All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, typically a 7.5% of compensation.
