INTRODUCTION

San Francisco Recreation and Park Department 

Note:  The funding for these positions is subject to approval by the Mayor's Office and no hires can be made until funding has been approved.   

 

                                                    MISSION STATEMENT

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's Mission is to provide enriching recreational activities, maintain beautiful parks and preserve the environment for the well-being of our diverse community.

The Recreation and Park Department administers and maintains more than 200 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces throughout the city, including two outside the city limits – Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierras.  The system also includes 15 large, full-complex recreation centers, nine swimming pools, five golf courses and hundreds of tennis courts, ball diamonds, athletic fields and basketball courts.  Also included in the Department’s responsibilities are the Marina Yacht Harbor, Candlestick Park, the San Francisco Zoo, and the Lake Merced Complex, which is operated for recreational purposes under the San Francisco Water Department.

APPOINTMENT TYPE  
Temporary Exempt. 
These positions are seasonal for the period approximately June 5 through August 27 and/or September 7 through 24, 2010.  The basic workweek is six (6) days as-needed.  Room and board are provided at
Camp MatherPrevious paid or volunteer experience with the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department does not guarantee employment.  These positions are subject to budgetary constraints. 

DUTIES
As representatives of the City and
County of San Francisco, the Recreation and Park Department and Camp Mather, the primary duty is to work in a manner to achieve our goal to provide a safe, clean, friendly, and fun camp environment for our guests.  All staff are expected to relate to the guests in a friendly manner and be helpful at all times and otherwise ensure they have a wonderful vacation.  To foster a sense of community, staff are expected to participate in the Staff Talent Show and Staff vs. Guest Athletic Activities.  Staff are expected to observe camp quiet hours, keep their living area clean, and be respectful of all co-workers while off duty as well as on duty.  Other Camp Assistant duties include washing and stacking dishes, cleaning silverware, serving food, working steam tables, busing tables, sweeping and mopping floors, unloading trucks, moving beds, cleaning cabins, washrooms, showers, windows and grounds, and other miscellaneous duties as directed by their immediate supervisor or Camp Manager.  Camp Employees must wear a bicycle helmet at all times while riding a bicycle on camp property.  Camp Employees may not consume alcohol in public or appear under the influence of alcohol in public on Camp Property.  Certified lifeguards will supervise the lake and pool, help with swim lessons, and keep the pool and swimming areas clean during their pool/lakeside work shift and perform other duties as listed above during any other assigned work shifts.  Camp Assistants function as emergency workers and may be required to work beyond their assigned hours.  Applicants must be willing to perform any Camp Assistant duty as assigned.  The Camp Assistant job is 100% physical including lifting objects up to 50 pounds. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.       High school graduation or equivalent as of June 2010;

2.       Ability to work with people of varied age groups and backgrounds;

3.       Ability to communicate effectively;

4.       Be in good physical condition;

5.       Present a neat, clean appearance at all times; and

6.       Ability to relate to the guests in a friendly and helpful manner;

7.       For Lifeguard:  Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid; CPR for the Professional Rescuer;
        and Waterfront Certificate*; WSI and Waterfront Certificate desirable. 
        *The Recreation & Park Department will train.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
First Aid, CPR and/or CERT/NERT (Citizen or Neighborhood) Emergency Response Team Training

NOTE:

Applicants will be screened for relevant qualifying experience.  Additional screening mechanisms may be implemented in order to determine candidates’ qualifications.  Only those candidates most qualified will be invited for an interview.  Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.  Verification of qualifying experience may be required at a later date.  Interviews will be conducted in San Francisco March 15 - 19, 2010.  Please note the dates.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

BENEFITS

All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, typically a 7.5% of compensation.
