MISSION STATEMENT
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s Mission is to provide enriching recreation activities, maintain beautiful parks and preserve the environment for the well-being of our diversified community.
The Recreation and Park Department administers and maintains more than 200 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces throughout the city, including two outside the city limits – Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierras. The system also includes 15 large, full-complex recreation centers, nine swimming pools, five golf courses and hundreds of tennis courts, ball diamonds, athletic fields and basketball courts. Also included in the Department’s responsibilities are the Marina Yacht Harbor, Candlestick Park, the San Francisco Zoo, and the Lake Merced Complex, which is operated for recreational purposes under the San Francisco Water Department.
APPOINTMENT TYPE
Temporary Exempt. These positions are seasonal for the period approximately April 28, - May 21, and/or September 25 - October 15, 2010. The basic workweek is five (5) days as needed and will include a variety of shifts including weekends and evenings. Overtime may be required. Room and board is provided at Camp Mather. Previous paid or volunteer experience with the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department does not guarantee employment. These positions are subject to budgetary constraints.
DUTIES
Under supervision, performs skilled duties in the preparation and cooking of large quantities of a variety of foods that are served cafeteria style. The Assistant Cook prepares ingredients for full course meals including entrees, side dishes, appetizers, soups and salads. Essential job duties include:
* Prepares and assists in preparing large amounts of food; adjusts recipes by expanding or reducing amounts of ingredients; operates kitchen equipment;
* Observes and enforces safety procedures in the kitchen;
* Assigns work to and supervises subordinate employees;
* Follows standardized recipes and established policies and procedures;
* Lifts and carries food and cooking supplies weighing as much as twenty-five (25) pounds or more;
* Maintains required records and reports; and
* Performs related duties as required.
All Camp Staff are representatives of the City and County of San Francisco, the Recreation and Park Department and Camp Mather. Therefore Camp Staff are expected to work in a manner to achieve our goal to provide a safe, clean, friendly, and fun camp environment for our guests. All staff are expected to relate to the guests in a friendly and helpful manner at all times, observe camp quiet hours, keep their living area clean and neat, be respectful of all co-workers while on duty as well as off duty, and to follow all camp rules and policies. Camp Employees must wear a bicycle helmet at all times while riding a bicycle on camp property. Camp Employees may not consume alcohol in public or appear under the influence of alcohol in public on Camp Property. Assistant Cooks function as emergency workers and may be required to work beyond their assigned hours. Applicants must be willing to perform any Assistant Cook duty as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires completion of eight (8) years of elementary school, supplemented by two (2) years experience in the preparation and serving of food; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
1. Verifiable experience as described above in a position that required large quantities of food in volumes of up to 500 persons per meal;
2. Ability to mix and stir large quantities of food substances (i.e. oatmeal, stew, sauces) on a routine basis;
3. Serve Safe and/or Food Safety Certificate;
4. First Aid/CPR Certificate;
5. CERT/NERT (Citizen or Neighborhood) Emergency Response Team Training; and
6. Valid driver’s license.

NOTE:
Applications will be screened for relevant qualifying experience. Additional screening mechanism may be implemented in order to determine candidates’ qualifications. Only those candidates most qualified will be invited for an interview. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.
