POSITION DESCRIPTION:
A Deputy Sheriff I performs a variety of duties relating to the custody and supervision of prisoners, organizing jail work programs and general law enforcement duties. Assignments may include the CountyJails, Courts and Field Units. Duties include booking and processing prisoners; controlling and supervising the activities of prisoners; operating and maintaining radio and other communication equipment; monitoring and controlling movement of all personnel and vehicles entering and exiting jail facilities; maintaining internal and perimeter jail, court or building security; responding to emergencies; preparing and maintaining records; and performing other duties as required. Shift work and overtime may be required. Appointees who have successfully served eighteen (18) months in Class 8302 Deputy Sheriff I will advance to Class 8304 Deputy Sheriff pursuant to Civil Service Rule 114, Article VII. No further probationary period as an 8304 Deputy Sheriff will be required.

DRIVING RECORD
: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of application and have a current history of responsible motor vehicle operation.

1. Oral/Performance Examination:
Candidate will be interviewed to determine their ability to identify and analyze issues, ability to maintain authority and interpersonal skills.
2. Physical Ability Test:
Candidates will be required to pass a physical ability test based on the physical requirements for the position.

Personal History Questionnaire:
Candidates must complete a Personnel History Questionnaire (PHQ).
4. Background Investigation:
Candidates must pass a background investigation. A comprehensive personal history statement must be completed and all statements by the candidates are subject to verification. Candidates will be required to participate in a polygraph and drug testing process. Any indication of criminal history, unlawful behavior, use of controlled substances, poor credit, unsatisfactory job performance, inability to deal with co-workers, inability to accept supervision, negative employment or personal references or other relevant factors may result in disqualification.
5. Medical Examination:
Prior to appointment, candidates must be determined by a licensed physician or psychologist to be free from any physical condition that would adversely affect the ability to perform the duties of a Peace Officer. Candidates must pass a medical examination by a designated City physician and must meet minimum standards for hearing, color vision, visual acuity ad other prescribed physical standards.
Certification Rule:
The certification rule for this examination will be Rule of the List. Upon successful completion of all components of the selection process, the names of successful candidates will appear on the eligible list in rank order. There are 0 refusals allowed. The Department may administer additional selection procedures before making final hiring decisions.
