Under supervision, the 3630 Librarian I performs journey level librarian work. The essential functions of this class include: providing information and direction on the use of library resources; performing reference work; supervising technical and clerical staff; performing selection, acquisition, cataloging or processing of library materials; writing letters, memos, reports, publications and other documents; participating in the development of collections in accordance with the San Francisco Public Library Collection Development Plan; interpreting library policy and responding to suggestions and inquiries; and assisting in policy formulation and implementation. Positions may also be responsible for developing positive community relations, and preparing programming and exhibitions.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
A Librarian I hired at the entry level step will receive a 5% step increase in pay after six months of service. The City & County of San Francisco anticipates frequent openings for entry-level librarian positions. Librarian I positions provide many rewarding opportunities in the main library and its branches throughout the City which includes promotional opportunities through the professional Librarian levels.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies (MLS/MLIS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.

Special Conditions:
* Some positions require fluency in a variety of languages depending upon the department's bilingual needs. Eligibles who pass the bilingual proficiency test will be considered for bilingual positions. Applicants must indicate on the application form the language(s) in which they claim proficiency.
* Some positions require one year of experience in library services for children and youth.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

SELECTION PROCEDURES
The City and County of San Francisco provides continuous recruitment for Class 3630 Librarian I. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis. A cut-off date will be established to evaluate supplemental applications of qualified candidates. Applications received after the cut-off date, or incomplete applications will be processed at a later date. The names of successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order.

Training and Experience Evaluation:
Using information provided in the Supplemental Applications, candidates will be evaluated to measure their relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of automated library systems, reference resources, and functional areas within the library; ability to plan, conduct and evaluate library programs and services; conduct reference and research work; conduct presentations; supervise staff; communicate both orally and in writing, interact with staff and the general public; conduct formal and informal training; and the ability to use a personal computer in a network environment. Weight: 30%

Possession of a Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies (MLS/MLIS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association. Weight: 70%

The certification/referral rule will be Rule of Three Scores.
