Under supervision, the 3630 Librarian I performs journey level librarian work. The essential functions of this class include: providing information and direction on the use of library resources; performing reference work; supervising technical and clerical staff; performing selection, acquisition, cataloging or processing of library materials; writing letters, memos, reports, publications and other documents; participating in the development of collections in accordance with the San Francisco Public Library Collection Development Plan; interpreting library policy and responding to suggestions and inquiries; and assisting in policy formulation and implementation. Positions may also be responsible for developing positive community relations, and preparing programming and exhibitions.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
A Librarian I hired at the entry level step will receive a 5% step increase in pay after six months of service. The City & County of San Francisco anticipates frequent openings for entry-level librarian positions. Librarian I positions provide many rewarding opportunities in the main library and its branches throughout the City and promotional opportunities through the professional Librarian levels.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION:
Using information provided in the Supplemental Applications, candidates will be evaluated to measure their relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of automated library systems, reference resources, and functional areas within the library; ability to plan, conduct and evaluate library programs and services; conduct reference and research work; conduct presentations; supervise staff; communicate both orally and in writing, interact with staff and the general public; conduct formal and informal training; and the ability to use a personal computer in a network environment. Possession of a Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies (MLS/MLIS) from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association. (Weight: 70%)

CERTIFICATION RULE: The certification rule for the eligible list will be Rule of Three Scores.

ELIGIBLE LIST:  The eligible list resulting from this examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals) as directed by the Human Resources Director.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

The Human Resources Director may approve use of the eligible list resulting from this selection process to make permanent Civil Service appointments to other position(s) involving the same or similar title in any department.
