NATURE OF POSITIONS:

Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse works in a variety of settings and locations including the following:

 

1.  San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, a large acute care teaching hospital which provides a Level I Trauma Center for the City and County of San Francisco and offers a comprehensive range of inpatient, ambulatory, skilled nursing and community oriented programs and is affiliated with the University of California - San Francisco;

2.  Primary Care Health Services (e.g. Neighborhood Health Centers, Tom Waddell, and Women’s Health Center);

3.  Jail Health Services (Correctional Facilities, Special Programs for Youth);

4.  Health at Home, a State licensed home health agency; and

5.  Laguna Honda Hospital, a long term care facility that provides acute care, skilled nursing care and rehabilitation to the medically complex and chronically ill population of San Francisco. 

 

All programs serve the culturally diverse, safety net and underserved population of San Francisco. Hospitals are open 24/7 and the other programs may be open weekends, nights and holidays.  Therefore, employees may be required to work nights, evening shifts, weekends and/or holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Specialty A:              Ambulatory Care Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2.  One (1) year of verifiable experience (equivalent to 2,000 hours) within the last five (5) years as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting, ambulatory care or primary care clinic setting.

 

Specialty B:             Correctional Facility Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2.  Six (6) months of experience (equivalent to 1,000 hours) within the last three (3) years as a Registered Nurse in an acute care, skilled nursing or clinic setting;   AND

3.  Possession of a valid Basic Life Support - Community (BLS-C) certificate for health care providers.

 

Specialty C:             Critical Care Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2A. One (1) year of verifiable experience (equivalent to 2,000 hours) within the last three (3) years as a Registered Nurse in: 

  a.   an Adult Medical/Surgical ICU with at least six (6) beds;   OR

  b.   an acute care PACU hospital setting with ICU patients

 

Specialty D:             Emergency Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2.  Two (2) years of verifiable experience (equivalent to 4,000 hours) within the last three (3) years as a Registered Nurse in a Level I or Level II Emergency Department;  AND

3.  Possession of a valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certificate, or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months.

 

Specialty E:              Home Health Care Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2A.  One (1) year of verifiable experience (equivalent to 2,000 hours) as a  Registered Nurse in a licensed home health agency;           OR

2B. Three (3) years of verifiable experience (equivalent to 6,000 hours) as a Registered Nurse in an acute care, long term care or community health setting.

 

Specialty F:             Long Term Care Nursing/Geriatric Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid California Registered Nurse License; AND

2.  Six (6) months of long term care nursing experience.

 

Specialty G:             Medical-Surgical Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License.

 

Specialty H:             Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2A.  One (1) year of verifiable experience (equivalent to 2,000 hours) within the last three (3) years as a Registered Nurse in a Level I or Level II Nursery;   OR

2B. Completion of a senior preceptorship in Infant Care.

 

Specialty I:               Nursing Quality Improvement

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2.  Two (2) years of verifiable experience (equivalent to 4,000 hours) within the last five (5) years as a Registered Nurse in an acute care hospital, clinic, home health agency or other health setting;   AND

3.  One (1) year of verifiable experience (equivalent to 2,000 hours) within the last three (3) years in Quality Improvement and/or Risk Management in a medical/healthcare setting or home health agency utilizing the OASIS and/or coordinating or participating in home health QI activities.

Note: Positions at the Home Health Agency also require one (1) year of verifiable Registered Nurse experience within the last five (5) years  in a licensed home health agency.

 

Specialty J:              Occupational Health Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2.  One (1) year of verifiable experience (equivalent to 2,000 hours) within the last five (5) years as a Registered Nurse in an occupational health setting.

 

Specialty K:             Perinatal Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2A.  One (1) year of verifiable experience (equivalent to 2,000 hours) within the last three (3) years as a Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery;   OR

2B. Completion of a senior preceptorship in Perinatal Care.

 

Specialty L:              Perioperative Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2A.  Two (2) years of verifiable experience (equivalent to 4,000 hours) within the last three (3) years as a Registered Nurse in an acute care hospital operating room; OR

2B.  One (1) year of verifiable experience (equivalent to 2,000 hours) within the last three (3) years as a Registered Nursing in Critical Care or Emergency Nursing.

Note: Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Nursing and/or Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification is preferred.

 

Specialty M:             Psychiatric Nursing

1.  Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License;   AND

2A. One (1) year of verifiable experience (equivalent to 2,000 hours) within the last five (5) years as a Registered Nurse in a Psychiatric Unit/Clinic and/or Mental Health Center;   OR

2B. Completion of a senior preceptorship in psychiatric nursing.

 

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate, issued by the American Heart Association, is required as a condition of employment for most positions.  Eligibles who do not possess such a certification may be appointed to a position, but may be required to obtain the certificate within two (2) weeks of hire date.  A photocopy of the valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be provided to the supervisor during this period for these positions.  Failure to show proof of certification within two (2) weeks of hire date, or maintain certification throughout employment may result in the dismissal and/or termination of employment.

License/Certification/Preceptorship:

All applicants must be able to produce a copy of required licenses, certifications and/or preceptorship when requested throughout the application/examination process.  Failure to provide verification(s) may result in rejection of application and removal from the examination process.

Verification of all experience needed to qualify if requested must be on the employer's letterhead indicating the name of the applicant, job title, dates of employment, hours per week, duties performed and must be signed by the supervisor and/or appropriate representative.  City employees do not need to submit verification of qualifying City work experience if experience gained is from the class to which appointed.  Credit for experience obtained outside of the employee's class will only be allowed if recorded in accordance with the provisions of Civil Service Commission Rules.  City employees relying upon qualifying work experience gained outside the City and County of San Francisco must submit written verification of such experience as described above. Verification of experience may be waived if impossible to obtain.  The applicant must submit a signed statement with the application explaining why verification cannot be obtained.  Waiver request will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Failure to submit the required verification or request for a waiver at the time of filing may result in rejection of the application.

 

SELECTION PROCEDURES:

 

Drug Calculation Test/Written Exam: Candidates will be expected to pass a drug calculation test and/or a written exercise, depending on the specialty area, to continue in the examination process.                             WEIGHT: Pass/Fail

Oral Examination: Candidates will be interviewed to determine their relative knowledge, ability and skill level in one or more of the following job related areas as appropriate. These areas may include, but not be limited to: knowledge of physiology and disease process; knowledge of current psychotropic and other

medications; knowledge of standard of care; knowledge of multi-disciplinary team approach to patient care; ability to make and document nursing assessments; knowledge of principles of nursing care plans; ability to perform emergency nursing skills; ability to communicate; and knowledge of leadership principles.                                                                                                                  WEIGHT: 100%

 

The Certification Rule for this selection procedure will be Rule of Three Scores.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

BENEFITS
