2320 Registered Nurse - Perioperative Training

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT:  Current Permanent Civil Service employees in class 2320 Registered Nurse are encouraged to apply. 


San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center is accepting applications for new graduates and/or experienced nurses for four (4) part time and one (1) full time positions in the Perioperative Care Nursing Training Program.


The Operating Room of San Francisco General Hospital consists of 10 operating suites and 1 cystoscopy room.  All surgical procedures are performed in these rooms, including trauma and ambulatory surgery.  A staffed operating suite is available for the critically injured trauma patient 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Elective surgery is performed between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with trauma and/or emergency surgery performed on an as-needed basis.  The Operating Room provides 24/7 scrub person coverage to the Labor and Delivery Unit for non- emergent and emergency Cesarean sections.  The unit does not care for radiation therapy implants.  The unit performs an average of 600 procedures per month.  SFGH has a full service OR excluding only elective open heart and organ transplant surgery.  The unit provides services for patients of all ages from neonate through elderly.




Perioperative Care Nursing:

·      Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including an interim permit) California Registered Nurse license


Condition of Employment:




Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association is required as a provision to employment for all positions.  Eligibles who do not possess such a certification may participate in this examination process and be appointed to a position(s), but will be required to obtain the certificate within two (2) weeks of hire date and maintain validity throughout length of employment.  A photocopy of the valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be provided to the appropriate supervisor within the allotted time frame.  Failure to demonstrate/show proof of possession of valid certification within two (2) weeks of hire date and throughout length of employment may result in dismissal and/or termination of employment.

DRUG CALCULATION TEST/WRITTEN EXAM:                       WEIGHT:  Pass/Fail


Candidates will be expected to pass a drug calculation test and/or a written exercise to continue in the examination process.


ORAL EXAMINATION:                                                        TOTAL WEIGHT:  100%


Candidates will be interviewed to determine their relative knowledge, ability and skill level in one or more of the following job related areas as appropriate. These areas may include, but not be limited to: ability to making nursing assessments; knowledge of standard of care; knowledge of leadership principles; and knowledge of management principles.


Applicants meeting the minimum requirements are not guaranteed advancement in the selection process.




1.     Applicants are encouraged to keep copies of all documents submitted.  The hiring department may require applicants to submit the same documents and/or additional documents at a later date.


2.    Prior to appointment, at the Department’s expense, applicants may be required to take a TB screening test, and a medical examination.


3.    Some positions may require bilingual fluency in a variety of languages depending upon the department’s needs. Only those eligibles who pass the bilingual proficiency test will be considered for these positions.


4.    The number of persons to be placed on an eligible list will be determined by the needs of the department; therefore applicants who receive passing scores are not guaranteed placement on the eligible list.


5.    Applicants who receive passing scores but are not employed within one (1) year from the date of the examination must reapply and retake the examination.


6.    Candidates who participate in the examination but do not receive a passing score cannot file another application for this examination for a period of six (6) months from the date of the examination.


7.    If an applicant fails an exam and later successfully appeals, their name will be added to a subsequent list.


8.    The “Rule of Three Scores” will be the Certification Rule for the eligible list.


9.     No waivers will be allowed.


10. If appointed, eligibles possessing interim permits or temporary licenses must present full and unrestricted California Registered Nurse licenses prior to completion of the probationary period.


11. Valid licensure must be kept current throughout length of employment. Failure to demonstrate/show proof of possession of the required valid licensure may result in dismissal and/or termination of employment.


12. Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
