INTRODUCTION

Under general supervision, a Community Police Services Aide performs a variety of police related duties for the San Francisco Police Department. Essential functions may vary depending on assignment and may include: directing traffic and issuing citations for parking violations at the San Francisco International Airport; regulating, directing, and searching vehicles entering the Airport Operations Area; accepting and processing complaints in person or over the telephone; ensuring security of restricted areas and property; utilizing two-way radios; completing reports and forms; providing information and assistance to the public; assisting ill or injured citizens; assisting in receiving, storing, and releasing of property; utilizing a computer terminal to enter and retrieve information; providing crowd control during events and emergency situations; sorting, filing, and maintaining reports and records; transporting and retrieving evidence to and from Property Room; maintaining inventory of office supplies and operating departmental vehicles. Incumbents also perform related duties as required.

Employees in this classification will be given assignments that may require occasional lifting, moving or carrying materials weighing up to 55 lbs.; extended standing, walking and/or sitting; and working in inclement weather; climbing up and down a 4 - 6 feet ladder and working in a noisy environment.

Appointees to this classification must be willing to work days, nights, weekends, holidays, and/or rotating shifts as needed. This job also requires mandatory overtime.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a high school diploma or successful completion of an equivalency test (G.E.D. or California High School Proficiency Examination); AND
2. Possession of a valid Driver License; AND
3. Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application; AND
4. One year of satisfactory full time public contact (2080 hours) or military experience.

Selection Procedures
Written Examination (Weight 100%)
Candidates will be tested to determine their relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas which may include, but are not limited to: written communication, public relations and information comprehension. Candidates who pass the written examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their written score. Placement on the eligible list does not guarantee nor imply that you will be offered employment. The City and County of San Francisco reserves the right to hire only the most suitably qualified candidates for this position.

Certification Rule
Candidates who pass the written examination will be placed on the eligible list. The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be “Rule of 10 Scores.”

Departmental Selection Procedures
After the eligible list has been adopted, and vacancies arise, the Police Department will administer additional selection processes to select the most suitable candidates from the eligible list. Additional selection processes include: Personal History Questionnaire evaluation, Departmental Interview, Background Investigation, Polygraph Examination, Psychological Examination, and Medical Examination.

Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) will be evaluated to identify candidates most likely to pass the background investigation.

Departmental Interview will evaluate the applicant’s oral communication ability and other abilities not tested by other examination components. Based on the Personal History Questionnaire evaluation, the most suitable candidates from the eligible list will be invited to participate in the departmental interview. The interview panel will make recommendations regarding who should proceed in the final hiring process.

Background Investigation
Prior to employment with the San Francisco Police Department, a background investigation will be conducted to establish suitability for employment. The investigation may include, but not be limited to, criminal history records, drug/alcohol screening, and other related employment and personal history records. Reasons for rejection may include use of controlled substance, felony convictions, repeated or serious violations of the law, inability to work with co-workers, inability to accept supervision or other relevant factors. The background investigation will also meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements.

Polygraph Examination will be used to verify the veracity and accuracy of information submitted by candidates regarding, but not necessarily limited to, subjects within the background investigation.

Psychological Examination consists of written tests and a clinical interview to determine the candidate's suitability for public safety work.

Medical Examination is currently provided by Occupational Health Services at San Francisco General Hospital. Each candidate will be individually evaluated and any current or past medical condition that is likely to compromise the candidate’s ability to perform the essential functions of the position may be cause for rejection. The medical examination may include taking blood and urine samples. Applicants will be notified of the date, time and place to report for the examination. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

BENEFITS

All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, typically a 7.5% of compensation.
