Under immediate supervision, the Library Page performs routine library clerical work. The essential functions assigned to this class include: shelving and sorting books and other library materials according to the Dewey Decimal or other library classification system, by alphabetical, chronological or subject order; scanning bar-codes, stamping, security taping, labeling, reinforcing paperbacks; performing minor book repair by replacing mylars, barcodes, and spine labels; entering and updating computer data which includes library accounts, records, and lists;  locating and retrieving books and other materials using an integrated library software system; monitoring and maintaining shelves; pulling library materials from shelves; maintaining reading areas, library collections, and shelving and storage areas in a clean and orderly manner; shifting and rearranging materials; sorting and routing daily mail; answering and screening phone calls and emails; providing direction and information in person, by phone or e-mail to the public regarding library services or facilities; using office machines and computers, and maintaining personal library email account; performing physical processing of library materials; picking up and delivering library materials and transporting them between departments. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1.  High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination) OR Six (6) months (1000 hours) of clerical or customer service experience.

AND

2.  Ability to lift boxes /bins weighing up to 30 lbs. and ability to move loaded carts weighing up to 250 lbs. (The probationary period will be used to evaluate this qualification.)

Verification:

The determination of candidates meeting the Minimum Qualifications (as described above) will be made by the City and County of San Francisco Human Resources.

Physical Requirements:

 

Positions in this classification include the ability to sustain physical effort involving considerable amounts of pushing and pulling library book carts and other library equipment, packing and unpacking library materials standing, bending, squatting, kneeling, lifting and twisting to perform duties associated with daily tasks. Some positions have a special condition that requires the ability to lift and/or move with assistance objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds or more.

 

Special Requirements:

 

Some positions in this class are subject to irregular work schedules and may require evening and/or weekend work; and require constant public contact. Position in this classification may be required to work at various locations within the Library system.

Selection Plan

Written Multiple Choice Examination (Weight: 100%): Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a written multiple-choice exam to measure competencies in job related areas which may include but are not limited to:   sorting and filing ability; interpersonal ability; and written communication ability.  All relevant experience must be on the application in order to be reviewed in the rating process. 


This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.


A passing score must be achieved in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. The hiring department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.


Candidate scores on this examination may also be applied to other announcements involving other job titles, when directed by the Human Resources Director.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Conclusion

Eligible List:

The eligible list resulting from this examination is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.


Certification:
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Ten Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
