Introduction

This opening will only be used to fill extra help jobs located in the Tahoe area.  

Temporary/Extra Help assignments are limited to 1000 hours (or 960 hours for CalPERS retired annuitants) in a fiscal year and are not eligible for benefits.

Appointments made from this recruitment are NOT eligible to transition to permanent status. 

POSITION INFORMATION

This Tahoe position requires the employee to work and drive in the field in adverse weather conditions (snow and ice), during odd or unusual hours during special projects or emergency conditions typically November through April,  ability to shovel snow to access illegally parked vehicles and to work shifts which include day, evening, night, weekend, or holiday shifts.

The ideal candidate will have prior work experience in a law enforcement agency with the ability to respond to accidents or incidents involving county vehicles or equipment and write accidents reports.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, enforces County parking regulations by patrolling assigned areas and isssuing citations and warnings; orders impounding of illegally parked vehicles as necessary; and performs related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Patrols and issues parking citations in assigned areas where parking is controlled or prohibited by County ordinance or code.
  • Orders impounding of illegally parked vehicles as necessary.
  • Advises the public of parking regulations.
  • Advises drivers to move vehicles parked illegally.
  • Operates a radio-equipped vehicle in the performance of work.
  • Answers complaints or requests for information in relation to parking violations or regulations.
  • Maintains appropriate records.
  • Prepares and makes oral and written reports and makes court appearances as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: One year of experience involving frequent public contact, preferably in a law enforcement agency.

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. 

License or Certificate:
May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position.  Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
 
Special Requirements:

  • Willingness to work odd or unusual hours during special projects or emergency conditions, and in adverse weather conditions.
     

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Parking laws and ordinances.

Ability to:

  • Apply the laws, regulations and ordinances governing the parking of motor vehicles on County roads.
  • Deal courteously and effectively with the general public.
  • Maintain records and prepare concise reports.
  • Carry out oral and written instructions.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Training & Experience Rating (100%)

Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula.  Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.

All applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be required to respond to an online Conviction History Questionnaire, which will be sent as a link on their notification that minimum qualifications have been met.  Failure to respond to this questionnaire within (3) three calendar days of the minimum qualification notification will result in disqualification from the examination.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination, which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation, sign a constitutional oath and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S.  For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation and/or be bonded.
