Placer County Sheriff's Office is seeking applications for Deputy Sheriff II. Qualified applicants who receive a conditional offer of employment will undergo an extensive background investigation to determine if the candidate meets the high standards set by the Sheriff's Office in the areas including, but not limited to: high moral character, honesty and exemplary work ethic. The Sheriff's Office also highly values those with a positive attitude toward fellow workers and the community they will be serving.
The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill both permanent and extra-help positions.
Extra-help employees can work for a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year. (CalPERS retirees are limited to 960 hours per fiscal year.) Incumbents assigned to these positions will typically be assigned bailiff/court security duties or will be assigned security duty in a correctional facility on an extra-help only basis.
To perform law enforcement and crime prevention work within a variety of assignments including to patrol assigned area and enforce State and local laws, to conduct investigations of misdemeanor and felony crimes, to supervise inmates in correctional facilities and to ensure court security.
This is the full journey level class within the sworn Deputy Sheriff series. This class is distinguished from the Deputy Sheriff I by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the entry level.
Receives general supervision from a Sergeant or other designated sworn personnel.
May exercise technical and/or functional supervision as a Field Training Officer, as an assigned Officer-in-Charge and in another specialized assignment.

Experience: One year of responsible law enforcement training and experience performing duties similar to a Deputy Sheriff I with Placer County.

Performance Examination (Pass/Fail)
(For applicants who have not been employed as a peace officer within the past twelve (12) months ONLY)
All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a performance examination, which will be scored on a pass/fail basis. The performance examination will consist of a series of job related exercises to assess basic physical agility skills.
NOTE: Applicants who have been employed as a peace officer within the past twelve (12) months will be considered as already meeting the physical agility criteria for this classification and will not need to take the performance examination.
All applicants must submit a copy of their CA P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Course (or CA P.O.S.T. equivalency training course) certificate with their application materials.
Training & Experience Rating (100%)
Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.
Prior to the date of hire, applicants for this classification must complete and pass a background check (which may include a voice stress analysis and/or a polygraph) and pre-employment psychological and medical examinations, including a drug screening, prior to appointment. All applicants must sign a constitutional oath, submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S., and be fingerprinted. For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age or be bonded.
All new permanent employees, with the exception of sworn law enforcement and management, shall be required to join the employee organization or pay an 'Agency Fee' as a condition of employment.
Placer County now offers an expedited process for qualifying certain applicants for interviews. Candidates currently employed, or employed within the last year, by a public agency operating under a personnel civil service or merit system may be eligible to be placed on a Public Agency Eligible List and certified as eligible for appointment to a similar job assignment without going through the examination process.
