POSITION INFORMATION

The Placer County Library is seeking self-motivated individuals with outstanding customer service skills to assist Library customers in the Tahoe City and Kings Beach libraries. Flexiblity is encouraged and schedules vary from eight to twenty hours per week. 

Temporary/Extra Help assignments are limited to 999 hours (or 960 hours for CalPERS retired annuitants) in a fiscal year. This classification is not eligible to receive benefits and is not transitionable to permanent status.

DEFINITION

To perform routine clerical duties in support of library operations and activities; to sort and shelve books and other library materials and to provide staff assistance to the public in busy library.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher level library staff.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Check materials in and out, issue library cards, and collect fines and fees.
  • Shelve books and other library materials.
  • Help patrons find books and information.
  • Maintain materials in order on shelves.
  • Clear tables and keep public areas in order.
  • Process newspapers and magazines for circulation.
  • Perform routine clerical assignments.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

It is the applicant's responsibility to identify in their application materials how they meet the minimum qualifications listed below.

Experience: None required.  Familiarity with libraries is desired.

Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

License and Certificate:
May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position.  Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • English usage and spelling.
  • Arithmetic and basic mathematical calculations.

Ability to:

  • Work independently.
  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
  • Learn to accurately shelve books, and other library materials.
  • Work weekend and evening shifts as assigned.
  • Learn to accurately shelve books, periodicals and library materials.
  • Learn library policies and procedures.
  • Learn the Dewey Classification System for shelving.
  • Learn to use personal computer, library-automated system, calculator, telephone, facsimile machine, photocopy machine, and other library-related equipment.
  • Perform detailed work with speed and accuracy.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • On a continuous basis, sit at desk and/or stand at counter for long periods of time.  Intermittently bend, twist, kneel, squat or climb while shelving, opening boxes, or moving equipment; twist and reach office equipment and high and low shelves; see and read print and computer terminal; write and use keyboard to communicate and to enter circulation and collection data; lift moderate weight.
  • Intermittently review documents related to library operations; observe, identify and problem solve library operations and procedures; understand and explain library policies and procedures.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

The applications and any attachments received for this recruitment will be forwarded directly to the Library for review and appraisal. Based on your application materials, the Library Director will select the most highly qualified applicants to invite to a hiring interview.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination, which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation, sign a constitutional oath and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S.  For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation and/or be bonded.

MODIFIED AGENCY SHOP

All new permanent employees, with the exception of sworn law enforcement and management, shall be required to join the employee organization or pay an 'Agency Fee' as a condition of employment.

SUBSTITUTE LISTS

The eligible list(s) resulting from this recruitment may be certified as a substitute list for a substantially similar classification.  For this purpose, a substantially similar classification is one at a lower level in the same classification (example: entry level vs. journey) and/or a similar classification (similar work performed, similar training and experience qualifications required). If you are contacted for an interview by a County department, you will be informed of the classification and other relevant information. If you choose not to interview for a substantially similar classification, you will remain on the eligible list for which you originally applied.

EMPLOYEES OF OTHER PUBLIC AGENCIES

Placer County now offers an expedited process for qualifying certain applicants for interviews. Candidates currently employed, or employed within the last year, by a public agency operating under a personnel civil service or merit system may be eligible to be placed on a Public Agency Eligible List and certified as eligible for appointment to a similar job assignment without going through the examination process.
