MAJOR FUNCTION

Performs duties managing a medium size county library.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Employees in this class perform professional duties of considerable difficulty requiring considerable initiative and independent judgment under general supervision. 

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.    Manages or assists in the management of the operations of a library agency or a library function.
  • Plans, organizes, implements and presents children’s programs to children, parents and caregivers.
  • Maintains regular contact with peers in schools and other children’s services agencies.
  • Coordinates toddler, preschool, youth and teen programs.
  • Conducts outreach programs that include schools, daycare centers, parks and recreation centers, and other designated agencies.
  • Provides reference and readers' advisory services. 
  • Instructs and assists customers in accessing library information. 
  • Participates in community relations activities, programming, and community outreach. 
  • Performs collection development and collection management activities.
  • Participates in the acquisition and cataloging of library materials. 
  • Designs, compiles and distributes information in automated formats.
  • Participates in the planning and of system-wide programs and services, as required.
  • Supervises the work of subordinate staff by scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance.
  • Assumes library facility in-charge responsibilities as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques and procedures of professional library work.
  • Considerable knowledge of children’s literature including bibliographic tools and sources, and other children’s library materials, including online databases.

  • Considerable knowledge of books, periodicals, and other source materials in one or more subject areas.

  • Considerable knowledge of age group reference materials and programs.

  • Considerable knowledge of children’s developmental stages.

  • Skill in the use of automated on-line catalog systems. 

  • Ability to assist patrons in the use of library materials formats.

  • Ability to use library classification, catalog, filing and record-keeping systems. 

  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 

  •  Ability to collect, organize and evaluate data. 

  • Ability to prepare and maintain work related records and reports.

  • Ability and willingness to develop strong interactive community relationships to ensure satisfactory patron interaction.

  • Ability to stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to sit and use the computer workstation, including keyboard and visual display terminal, for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to lift, push, or handle library materials weighing up to 20 pounds.

  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

  • Ability to stand, bend and kneel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Note: Minimum Qualifications MUST be attained before the recruitment ending date.

 

Graduation from an American Library Association accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS); and

One year of post-MLS experience as a Children’s Librarian; and

Possession of a valid Driver License.

APPOINTING AUTHORITY MAY REQUIRE

Courses in children’s literature and children’s work taken for credit from an American Library Association accredited college or university.

    OPEN AND CLOSED RECRUITMENTS:  We are running concurrent Closed (Internal) and Open recruitments. Internal candidates on a closed eligibility list must be considered first, prior to a selection being made from the open eligibility list. To be considered for the same classification under Open recruitment, internal candidates must also apply under the open recruitment process.

     

    VETERANS' PREFERENCE:  Preference will ONLY be entitled upon initial appointment for eligible veterans and eligible spouses of veterans. Documentation to support entitlement to preference MUST be provided at the time of application.
