The Department of Child Support Services currently has an opening for the position of Child Support Attorney. The current vacancy may be filled at any level dependent upon candidate experience. The Child Support Attorney is responsible for providing professional legal services in the preparation and litigation of a variety of child support matters. Typical duties include: establishing paternity, child support and medical support orders; ensuring enforcement of such orders; advising department staff, custodial and non-custodial parents, and witnesses regarding legal issues involved in preparation of child support cases; preparing legal pleadings and judgments required for hearings, trials and legal proceedings; and preparing related reports and correspondence as needed.
Please note: The Child Support Attorney classification series is defined as unclassified and is exempt from civil service status.
The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge of:
· Civil and criminal codes related to California family law.
· Administrative law procedures.
· Legal research methods.
· Rules of evidence.
· Ethical and professional rules of conduct.
Skills/Abilities to:
· Analyze and apply legal principles and precedents to complex legal problems.
· Present statements of law, facts, and arguments clearly, logically and assertively, both in written and oral format.
· Maintain confidentiality and objectivity.
· Effectively present and conduct trials.
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
· Operate and use personal computer applications used by the department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
License: Active member in good standing with the California State Bar (member
(all levels) number must be clearly identified on the employment application).
Experience
Level I: None.
Level II: One year as a practicing attorney-at-law.
Level III: Two years as a practicing attorney-at-law.
Level IV: Three years as a practicing attorney-at-law, including at least one year of experience as an attorney practicing in California.
Note: Experience must be acceptable to the Director of Child Support Services.
