The Fresno County Sheriff's Department is seeking experienced Communications Dispatchers to receive and respond to emergency calls by telephone or radio. The successful candidate will key pertinent data into a computer; operate a multi channeled computer assisted radio system to dispatch public safety personnel; and perform related work as required. Applicants must be willing to work shifts as assigned, including nights, weekends and holidays.
The ideal candidates will possess:
- knowledge of state vehicle and penal codes
- knowledge of Fresno County geography, jurisdictional boundaries, Thomas Brothers wall and beat maps
- knowledge of CAD, 911, Clets, NCIC, and ANI-ALI systems
- ability to function under stressful conditions and circumstances
- ability to relay information effectively and calmly to caller and others
- effective oral and written communication skills
- ability to read and interpret written materials and maps
- ability to memorize and retain information, and spell accurately
- ability to type from auditory source, and control telephone conversation to elicit information
- eye, hand, mouth, and foot, coordination
- a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgment.
As a condition of employment, candidates must undergo and pass a thorough and detailed personal background investigation, medical and polygraph examination. These investigations include employment/credit histories, arrest/criminal records, drug/alcohol use, and personal conduct. Background materials for failed candidates are retained for three years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience:
Level II: One (1) year of full-time, paid experience equivalent to that gained as a Communications Dispatcher with the County of Fresno.
Level III: Two (2) years of full-time, paid experience equivalent to that gained as a Communications Dispatcher with the County of Fresno.
Other: Ability to type forty-five (45) words per minute is required for Level II; and fifty (50) words per minute is required for Level III. (A typing certificate validated within the last 12 months must be submitted along with the application).
SAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Dispatches public safety personnel using the Computer Assisted Dispatch and radio systems.
- Answers incoming calls; elicits pertinent information; determines nature of the call; keys information into the CAD system; or refers call or caller according to policy and procedure.
- Monitors dispatch alarm systems in order to dispatch officers to burglaries in progress.
- Prioritizes calls in order to determine dispatch order and law enforcement personnel required in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Performs a variety of checks on people, weapons and vehicles in order to provide information to officers using the CAD, Clets, NCIC, and ANI ALI systems.
- Notifies and relays information to appropriate agencies regarding public hazards.
- Monitors all radio transmissions from law enforcement field units in order to insure officer safety, anticipates officer needs for assistance, respond rapidly to emergency radio traffic, and to determine changes in field conditions using the CAD and radio systems.
