SUMMARY STATEMENT

This class is involved in completing basic repairs in several trade fields and performing routine preventative maintenance and repair work at the semi-skilled level.

CAREER LADDER

Upon satisfactory completion of department promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be eligible to be promoted to the next level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Performs routine maintenance and preventative maintenance on equipment, interior and exterior of facility which may include replacing ballast por exits and fluorescent tubes, lights and switch starters, lubricate pumps, clean filters, check fan belts, and inspect gauges and pumps.
     
  • Performs minor and basic repairs in trade areas such as plumbing, painting, carpentry, installs masonate and tile, repairs door locks, window blinds and tracks and wall boards.
     
  • Assists in machinery and equipment repair.
     
  • Assists in groundkeeping activities, snow/ice removal, grass cutting, trash removal.
     
  • Assists technical supervisor in plumbing, electrical, building repairs and structural additions when required and may assist in the operation of treatment and disposal plants and basic repairs to other system elements when necessary.
     
  • Operates machinery and vehicles, transports passengers, tools, equipment and materials, and assists in maintaining and servicing equipment.
     
  • Supervises an inmate work crew in the performance of assigned duties; maintains security of all tools, supplies, equipment and assigned inmates at all times; includes body searches of inmates, tool count, live body count and material inventory.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Correctional Officer/Physical Plant Maintenance Trades Mechanic I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. At least 19 and 1/2 years of age.
  3. Knowledge of operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools used in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting or HVAC.
  4. Knowledge of performing work in a variety of trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting or HVAC.
  5. Possession of a Drivers License.

ADDITIONAL POSTING INFORMATION

DOC Special Requirement: Prior to institutional assignment, candidates must successfully complete all phases of a nine-week Correctional Office Basic Course.  This course is administered by the Department of Correction at the Employee Development Center.  Coursework includes physical, classroom and hands-on training.  Instruction is provided in the areas of inmate supervision, defensive tactics, riot control, weapons, report writing and emergency medical training.

NOTE:  The Correctional Officer Training Program is approved by the Veterans Administration Delaware State Approving Authority for the training of Veterans.

*Incumbents working four or more hours between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. the following day will receive 5% shift differential pay.

CONDITIONS OF HIRE

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of employment.

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.

Union:  As a condition of accepting employment, the person selected for this position shall join and pay dues to the labor organization or may, instead not join but pay a service fee no greater than the dues.  The labor organization has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other work related purposes.

Examination: A written test is required.  You will need to retake the exam if you have not applied in DEL by 3/24/2010.
