Summary Statement

The incumbent provides instructional leadership to educational programs and staff that serve student individual needs and implements comprehensive school programs to the needs of students in Juvenile Justice programs, facilitates student transition issues related to students entering and leaving the system of care, assists in the development, implementation, internal monitoring and reporting for State and Federal programs, prepares employee appraisals and functions as integral member of residential management team.

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities in a satisfactory manner. Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position.

  • Oversees daily operations of assigned school programs (including class coverage)
  • Provides instructional leadership in curriculum development and teaching strategies
  • Provides in-service training to meet the needs of staff and students
  • Acts as liaison to hosting facility and community at large
  • Collaborates with teachers (and unit staff) regarding on-going programming needs
  • Ensures system of accountability, communication and respect for teachers and students
  • Ensures program meets or exceeds all accreditation requirements determined by oversight agencies (DOE, ACA, JACHO, Delacare, Middle States)
  • Oversees communication with public schools regarding mandated documentation and student transitions
  • Ensures department, state and federal mandates are followed with corresponding documentation maintained and shared as required
  • Works within department guidelines to hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff
  • Monitors program expenditures and ensure appropriate use of department funds
  • Assists in the systems staff development program
  • Participates as a leadership team member

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Must be certified or certifiable by the State of Delaware, Department of Education as Principal or Assistant Principal.
  2. At least one year experience with high risk youth in a juvenile/correctional setting or equivalent.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of transition needs services for youth as they return to community schools and reach adulthood.
  4. Knowledge of supervisory and administrative duties.

License,Registrations and Certifications

Applicant will submit the following at time of interview:

  1. Copy of Professional Status Certificate or License.
  2. Copy of unofficial transcripts.
  3. Documentation of Praxis-1 Scores.

Conditions of Hire

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
