Summary Statement

This is entry level commodity inspection work. The agricultural areas of focus for this position is egg grading and compliance work. Work location is Puglisi Egg Farms in Middletown, DE.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here. 
  • Conducts inspection of commodities on the basis of contractor or USDA standards and  certifies their quality, condition, size, weight, quantity, and grade.
     
  • Verifies proper dating and labeling of commodity packages and containers.
     
  • Enforces federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.
     
  • Inspects, samples, tests, and grades commodities using standard inspection techniques.
     
  • Interprets and explains technical standards, rules, and regulations; explains and defends all grade and inspection determinations and coordinates grading services with plant production activities.
     
  • Cooperates with federal agencies, official state organizations and agencies, and other State representatives on matters related to agricultural inspection and grading.
     
  • Develops a good working relationship with plant personnel, retailers, farmers, and facility management.
     
  • May prepare samples and/or laboratory analysis.
     
  • Provides technical information and assistance to representatives of the Attorney General's Office as well as the Inspector General's Office in preparing court cases and testifying. Prepares a variety of reports.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Agricultural Commodity Inspector I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

 

  1. Knowledge of inspecting agricultural commodities such as poultry, eggs, fruits, vegetables, seeds, grains or fertilizers.
  2. Knowledge of math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  3. Knowledge of record keeping.
  4. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Conditions of Hire

1. Upon conditional offer you must pass a color vision test to meet the requirements of the position.

2. As a condition of hire applicants must successfully complete all required training to obtain a USDA license and certification by the end of the probationary period.
