Summary Statement

A class incumbent reports to the Chief of Bureau of Prisons.  Incumbent will be responsible for coordinating between the Department of Correction and the Department of Education on the prison education program meeting the needs of both departments and providing a quality education program to inmates.  Education programs consist of adult basic education, the James H. Groves High School, GED and Life Skills.  Vocational programs could include training in the following areas: computer training, custodial maintenance, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, residential electric, blueprint reading, and drafting.

Essential Functions

  • Knowledgeable in management and supervisory techniques; planning, budgeting, policy making, legislative process; public policy issues relative to the criminal justice system; ability to comprehend, interpret and write laws, policies and regulations.
  • Direct, performs and coordinate special projects on behalf of the Chief, Bureau of Prisons.
  • Gathers and analyzes technical, legal, statistical and budgetary information and provides advice and reports to the Chief, Bureau of Prisons.  Supervise and assess subordinate staff in light of the goals/objectives.  Effects disciplinary measures and process commendation as required.
  • Drafts, reviews and analyzes Bureaus of Prison policy.
  • Prepares reports and contracts concerning the Bureau of Prisons operations.
  • Handles inmate grievances for the Department in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensures incarcerated individuals are classified in and out of the prison adult education program.    
  • Ensures inmate information is correct and accrued toward sentence reduction for participation in the prison adult education program.
  • Ensures dedicated facilities are provided to educational programs that will accommodate educational needs and include heat, air conditioning, electric, telephone and internet access for the administrator.
  • Facilitate DOC services for education and serve as a liaison between the Department of Correction and Department of Education to ensure a quality educational program is offered.
  • Ensures inmates who have been identified by the teacher/supervisor for displaying inappropriate behavior in the educational program are disciplined.      
  • Ensures criminal background checks are completed on Department of Education prison education employees.      
  • Provide personnel functions for DOC employees employed as prison adult education and life skills teachers.

    Job Requirements

    JOB REQUIREMENTS for Principal (Education Associate)

    1. Master’s degree with a concentration in adult education, correctional education or a related field.
    2. Three years of experience in adult education.
    3. Two years of experience in administration, organization and supervision of general adult education and/or adult basic education, adult secondary education, continuing education or adult career and technical education.
    4. Within 6 semester hours of meeting the requirements for Standard certification as a Principal/Assistant Principal. 

    License,Registrations and Certifications

    2. Copy of Professional Status Certification or License, if available
    3. Documentation of Praxis-I Scores, if available

    Conditions of Hire

    Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

    Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.
