Summary Statement

The seasonal Naturalist Kayak Guide Position is responsible for developing and conducting, under direction, interpretive programs that will increase the public’s awareness of their surrounding environment and foster the appreciation, enjoyment and utilization of Delaware State Parks.  Duties may vary for each facility.  Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions.  Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all position in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.  Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Lead public and group kayak tours as a guide.
  • Operate kayak rental facility.
  • Assist with maintenance of kayak rentals, including money  handling and paperwork.
  • Assist with maintenance of kayaking equipment.
  • Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Must be dependable and have good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and have fun.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Minimum of 2 years of college coursework in biology, environmental education or related field.
  2. Experience kayaking and/or canoeing.

Conditions of Hire

Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
