Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for overseeing and participating in recreational and or leisure time activity programs for the mentally or physically ill and disabled, or developmentally disabled.

Nature and Scope

A class incumbent reports to a technical superior and is responsible for planning and implementing recreational programs for clients and patients. Incumbents oversee and instruct patients/clients in a variety of therapeutic activities such as games, music, athletics, painting, arts and crafts, exercise and swimming. Work involves planning organizing and coordinating trips and special events such as Special Olympics, carnivals, movies, musical concerts and holiday programs. Incumbents train, assign, review and monitor the work of lower level staff to ensure conformance with policies, procedures and program goals. An incumbent conducts client/patient assessments to determine interests and needs and participates in treatment team meetings. Incumbents have frequent contact with representatives from recreational organizations, community groups and civic organizations in order to coordinate activities to develop program proposals.

Essential Functions

  • Plans and organizes trips and special events.
      
  • Assumes responsibility for the care and safety of clients/patients and may drive a van or school bus on trips outside the facility.
     
  • Oversees and instructs patients/clients in a variety of therapeutic recreational and leisure time activities.
     
  • Assigns and reviews the work of lower level staff. Trains new employees in the methods and techniques of conducting activities, assessing needs and completion of records and reports.
     
  • Maintains records and files and prepares reports of client/patient progress.
     
  • Participates in team meetings to discuss client's progress and any changes in activities program.
     
  • Performs minor maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating and making mechanical adjustments on activity equipment.
     
  • Speaks to community organizations, civic groups and/or other interested parties regarding the Recreational Activities Programs.

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of planning, coordinating and implementing recreational and leisure time activities for mentally or physically ill/disabled and developmentally disabled clients.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of leading individuals and groups in various activities.
  • Knowledge of effective means of oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping practices.
  • Ability to train and oversee the work of staff.
  • Ability to motivate clients and patients to participate in program activities.
  • Ability to organize, plan and coordinate activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain accurate records.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Activity Aide II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in working with persons with disabilities.
  2. Six months experience in conducting group activities.
  3. Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  4. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  5. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
