Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for skilled welding in the repair and fabrication of a variety of articles.

Nature and Scope

A class incumbent works under general supervision of an administrative superior. A class incumbent performs welding operations at the journeyman level, fabricating and repairing a wide variety of items and parts.  Work also includes ordering materials and supplies as needed and maintaining records of time and materials used.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Fabricates items and parts for equipment and repairs structures and parts of motor vehicles, appliances, tools, furniture and other objects.
     
  • Fabricates from blueprints, sketches and samples, a wide variety of brackets, racks, framework, stands, tanks, containers, sign bases and supports.
     
  • Welds leaks in pipes and heating systems.
     
  • Does blacksmithing in making and sharpening tools.
     
  • Operates electric and acetylene welding equipment, hoists, lathes, presses, drills, grinders, saws and related power tools and equipment.
     
  • Keeps records of time and materials as required.
     
  • May perform some machinist work in making tools and parts for machinery.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the kinds of welding rods and flux used.
  • Knowledge of techniques of welding metals of various thicknesses and uses.
  • Knowledge of the operation and proper use of electric welding equipment.
  • Knowledge of the tools used in the blacksmith and machinist trades.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Skill in the trade of welding.
  • Ability to work from drawings and blueprints in fabricating objects.
  • Ability to keep records and make simple reports.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Welder
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in electric or gas welding.
  2. Six months experience in interpreting blueprints, schematics or technical drawings.
