Summary Statement

This class is responsible for the repair of patient clothing and hospital/institution property, as well as to make drapes, curtains, linens, etc. for the institution.

Nature and Scope

This class consists of routine work performed with general supervision from a laundry or housekeeping supervisor. Incumbents in this classification are responsible for mending, altering or making a variety of items such as patient clothing, curtains, drapes, linens and other items of cloth. In addition, incumbents are to clean and maintain sewing machines and related equipment in good working condition and order supplies as necessary. May design and make special items such as restraints, padded mitts and helmets.

  • Repairs and/or alters patient clothing and hospital property such as blankets, linens, curtains, robes, etc.
     
  • Makes items such as drapes, curtains, linens, laundry bags, kitchen bags, and related items as needed.
     
  • Maintains accurate record of all clothing/property made, altered, or repaired.
     
  • Cleans and maintains sewing machines.
     
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies, and orders supplies as needed.
     
  • May create new patterns for items requested by staff, i.e., padded mitts and helmets, harness bibs and restraints.

  • Knowledge of materials and methods used in performing sewing and mending activities.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of sewing machines and related equipment.
  • Skill in needle work and in operation of sewing machines.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
