Summary Statement

This class is responsible for operating vehicles for the transport of physically, mentally and developmentally disabled persons and volunteer workers.

Nature and Scope

A class incumbent functions under general supervision from a technical/administrative superior. Work involves transporting physically, mentally and developmentally disabled persons and volunteer workers between their place of residence and community treatment or recreational facilities and/or transporting patients to hospitals, doctor's offices, etc. from a State operated facility. The incumbent may be required to lift and otherwise assist disabled persons in and out of vehicles and other facilities. A significant aspect of the work involves understanding and dealing with the special needs of clients displaying anti-social and disruptive behavior. In addition, an incumbent is responsible for the routine maintenance and cleaning of the vehicles and may operate facilities support service vehicles requiring a Class B driver's license.

  • Operates vehicles providing inter-community transportation of incapacitated persons and volunteer workers.
     
  • Ensures seating and wheelchair restraints are appropriate to the specific needs of each person.
     
  • Performs routine maintenance to ensure safe mechanical condition and cleanliness of vehicles.
     
  • Assists with passengers boarding and exit of vehicles and other facilities.
     
  • May operate facility support service vehicles such as trash, laundry and food trucks.

  • Knowledge of practices and procedures of vehicular operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of passenger restraint methods and equipment.
  • Knowledge of roads and highways within assigned geographic area.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid.
  • Skill in techniques of defensive driving.
  • Ability to assist with lifting incapacitated clients/patients.
  • Ability to calm and restrain persons displaying disruptive or physically threatening behavior.
  • Ability to perform routine vehicular maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain vehicular logs and record passenger behavior problems.

  1. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
