Correctional Officer/Stationary Fireman (#MCCI02)
Summary StatementThis class is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and participating in the operation and maintenance of multiple-unit mixed fuel fired stationary boilers and related auxiliary equipment to ensure a continuous supply of steam and/or hot water to secure facilities.
Nature and ScopeThe class incumbent reports to a technical superior and is responsible for monitoring, coordinating, and participating in the overall operation and maintenance of multi-unit fuel fired stationary boilers and related auxiliary equipment to assure continuous supply of steam and/or hot water for the secure facility. An incumbent plans, schedules, assigns and oversees the work of CO/Physical Plant Maintenance Mechanic(s) as well as skilled and unskilled inmate workers. Work also involves training lower level staff and providing technical guidance when needed. An incumbent makes rounds to inspect and ensure proper operation of equipment. Incumbents continually monitor and coordinate operations to identify and diagnose systems problems. An incumbent supervises inmate work crews to include maintaining security of all tools, supplies and equipment. Class incumbent makes periodic counts of inmates to assure their location and custody and are responsible for the enforcement of all rules, regulations and procedures affecting discipline, security and safety. Incumbents also operate and maintain emergency electrical generators and may operate and repair various vehicles and equipment engines. Work includes overseeing and maintaining daily logs, readings, chemical tests and charts in accordance with normal practices. An incumbent is also responsible for ordering fuels, materials and parts. Assures physical plant needs are known by management and supervisor, and confers with supervisors on contractual services. Work involves regular exposure to hazardous conditions and occasionally requires physical effort in order to restrain and subdue inmates.
